TRAVEL
Journey to Alaska By Land and Sea
By Judie L. Karhan
Alaska is one of the most strikingly beautiful places in North America. By land or sea, a journey through our 49th state is an adventure of unparalleled proportion.
Along the Inside Passage, a 1,000-mile stretch of waterway, cruise passengers marvel at majestic glaciers calving into deep, steely blue waters where whales, porpoises and sea otters frolic. Bears, deer and other wild animals can be seen roaming along the densely forested shoreline, as bald eagles soar above. And with each turn of the bend yet another incredible view of mountains, sea and sky unfolds.
Each community in Southeast Alaska clings to its cultural heritage. In Ketchikan, ancestral home of the Tongas tribe
of Tlingit, find the world’s largest collection of totem poles. Museums and cultural centers provide native dancing, carving and artifact exhibits. Skagway displays its colorful history
at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, where wooden boardwalks and false-fronted buildings still stand. Combine your Alaska cruise with a land-based adventure
that takes you to magnificent Denali National Park. Holland America’s Land + Sea Journeys are a perfect way to get
a glimpse of life in Alaska’s major population settlements – Anchorage and Fairbanks – and to explore Denali National Park & Preserve. Land & Sea Journeys also venture off the beaten path, showcasing destinations such as Dawson City in the heart of gold rush country, and Whitehorse, where you can follow the route of Klondike gold stampeders and see historic Minto.
In Fairbanks, Alaska’s Golden Heart City, board the sternwheeler Discovery III for a narrated scenic cruise on the Chena and Tanana rivers. In Anchorage, visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center, where you can stroll through six authentic life- sized village sites representing several Alaskan native peoples. From Anchorage, you can travel the scenic Seward Highway to Portage Lake for a sightseeing cruise of the glacier.
With Holland America, travelers also have the opportunity to travel by way of luxury domed rail car for a two-night stay at
Denali National Park, with accommodations in the exclusive McKinley Chalet Resort at the park’s entrance. Denali is home to the highest peak in North America, Mount McKinley, one of the best places on earth to view animals in their natural habitat. Travelers are certain to catch sight of foraging caribou, Dall sheep, foxes, moose, wolves and brown bears.
