TRAVEL
Northward on the Atlantic Coast
By Judie L. Karhan
With their deep historic roots, the quaint towns and vibrant cities that lie along the Atlantic coastline of New England and Eastern Canada present the traveler with a colorful tapestry of images that tell the story of two nations shaped by bravery, insightfulness and fortitude.
A cruise along this naturally rugged but magnificently scenic coastline offers the perfect opportunity to delve into the history of these countries and take in celebrated scenic sites such as Acadia National Park and the Bay of Fundy’s reversing rapids. AAA Central Penn invites you to explore this region on a seven- day Discoveries cruise this summer.
Cruise to Newport, Rhode Island, yachting capital of the world. The city’s beaches, historic neighborhoods and scenic waterfront make this a supremely pleasant port to explore. A thriving seaport in Colonial days, Newport became a summer playground for America’s wealthiest families in the 19th century. Today, visitors can view opulent seaside estates such as The Breakers, The Elms and famous Rosecliff.
The journey next takes us to historic Boston, hailed as the Cradle of American Independence. Travel back to Revolutionary Boston by following the famed Freedom Trail. Begin at Boston Common and follow in the footsteps of our forefathers on this 2.5-mile trail highlighting 16 of Boston’s most historical sites from the American Revolution. You might also browse Newbury Street, an eclectic collection of 19th-century brownstones, upscale boutiques, sidewalk cafes and trendy galleries in the city’s historic Back Bay.
From Boston it’s on to Bar Harbor, Maine, situated on a rocky coastline with mammoth granite cliffs. This region is home to Acadia National Park, where there are more than 120 miles of trails for hiking and numerous lakes for canoeing. Visitors to Bar Harbor during the summer months can also enjoy whale-watching at a time of year when the weather is almost always perfect for getting outside. Enjoy the seaside atmosphere of Bar Harbor on Main Street, lined with shops, boutiques and dining venues.
In the province of New Brunswick, Saint John is home to the Bay of Fundy, where you can watch the swirling tide crash one
way – and within the hour turn completely around at the unique reversing falls. Visit City Market, Canada’s longest running market displaying local color and culinary surprises.
Or make your way to Rockwood Park, a 2,200-acre park with an endangered-animal zoo, horseback riding, and hiking caves.
Halifax welcomes visitors with its beautifully restored waterfront buildings recalling the city’s centuries-old maritime heritage. Stroll along Halifax’s thriving waterfront boardwalk, which leads to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Visit the Halifax Citadel, a 19th-century British fortress, where you can watch the 78th highlanders as they drill on the central parade grounds and see reenactments of 19th-century life as it was in the Citadel.
