Now is the Time to Make Travel Plans
By Sandy Fenton
I still can’t believe it’s been over a year year since the COVID-19 pandemic turned our lives upside down – including how, where and when we can travel.
There have been so many changes within the industry, it’s a full- time job just trying to keep up with all of the mandates, protocols and accurate travel news. But here’s what I know for sure:
• There is a massive pent-up urge to travel and many of us are doubling up or extending our future vacations. Long- dreamed-of-travels have become a priority, and especially wanting to share these once-in-a-lifetime experiences with the people who mean the most to us.
• The vaccine and/or proof of negative COVID-19 tests will be key to opening up the world of travel – and will not be going away anytime soon.
• Strict new health, safety and cleaning measures will remain the norm throughout the entire travel industry. Hotels, resorts, river and ocean cruise lines, airlines, tour companies, public transportation, attractions and restaurants will follow and exceed all the required protocols.
• Road trips offering several outdoor activities and spacious ranches, camping, national parks, all-inclusive resorts and sports-oriented vacations will attract families, as will beach, mountain and lake house rentals.
Popular future travel trends (foreign and domestic) will focus on:
• Stress-less and crowd-less travel experiences combined with meaningful and authentic excursions with local experts.
• Private, after-hours, small group access to iconic attractions that prior to COVID-19 suffered from over-tourism.
• Less-populated port destinations and off-the-beaten-path adventure travel.
• Small ship expedition and luxury cruising. Longer river and ocean cruise itineraries with wellness and holistic themes.
• Family-focused land tours and ocean cruises. Luxury resort properties specializing in fitness, well-being, healthy and active getaways.
Sales and promotions will continue for every mode of travel and tourism, but buyer beware – savvy river and ocean
