and emerge on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. This railway tunnel opened in 1928 and cuts through 6.3 miles of mountainous terrain.
One of today’s highlights is the Gross Reservoir dam. Built in 1954, it has a surface area of 440 acres with a spillway that sits at 7,225 feet in elevation.
Make sure you keep your camera close as you travel along the Colorado River through a series of captivating natural wonders, including Byers Canyon and Gore Canyon. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as these canyons are the perfect place to spot pronghorns, deer, and eagles.

MOAB TO GLENWOOD SPRINGS
After exploring Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park, you’ll begin your Rocky Mountaineer train journey from Moab to Glenwood Springs. Settle in and prepare to be amazed, bring out your camera and get ready to start your two-day, all daylight adventure of traveling through chromatic deserts, jagged cliffs, and vibrant sandstone mountains.
Admire the stunning red sandstone cliffs of Ruby Canyon, accessible only by train or from the river. This canyon is 25 miles long and is appropriately named after the ruby-toned landscape that lines the canyon walls.
On the way to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, you’ll pass natural wonders such as Parachute Creek, and Mount Peale, the highest point of the La Sal Mountains at an impressive 12,726 feet.
GLENWOOD SPRINGS TO DENVER
All aboard for another day of adventure. Take in the spectacular views of rugged canyons and the Colorado River while enjoying a hot breakfast served onboard the train.
The route slowly gains elevation before reaching the Continental Divide, the exact point where river waters drain into the Pacific Ocean on the west slope and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Here you will pass through the historic Moffat Tunnel
