TRAVEL
Sunny Portugal
A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise often overlooked by the average traveler. More experienced travelers, however, recognize all this little gem has to offer. This energetic and vibrant country, with its rich, centuries-long history, extraordinary hospitality and an emerging sector of high-end hotels, restaurants and shops is emerging into the spotlight. Here are just a few reasons why this gem should be on your destination wish list.
Portugal’s location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture, be it cuisine, its beautiful beaches or architecture. Its location also means temperatures rarely drop below 60° Fahrenheit, making the days reliably sunny – perfect vacation weather.
As one of the continent’s least developed nations, Portugal remains one of Western Europe’s most reasonably priced countries. Costs for accommodations, drinks and meals
are very reasonable. Drinks (including glasses of very good Portuguese wine) rarely cost more than three to four euros. Low costs also keep shopping affordable, and travelers can easily find unique accessories and home goods made by local artisans, often using traditional methods readily available.
The country is safe, economically stable, and easily accessible for U.S. travelers. In contrast to energetic and exciting cities like Lisbon and Porto, Portugal is largely comprised of small towns which provide a relatively slow
and peaceful pace. Additionally, while the official language is Portuguese, British travelers have for decades been spending long weekends in Portugal, consequently most members of the hospitality industry have adapted and speak fluent English, making it even easier for American travelers.
Portugal contains a mix of terrains that offer panoramic vistas and accommodate a myriad of activities and excursions. The country is also compact, with no two destinations more than a half-day drive from each other, making it easy to explore. Some of the must-see destinations include Lisbon, Evora (UNESO World Heritage Site), Monsaraz, Lagos, Sintra (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Faro and Porto.
No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.
AAA invites you to explore Sunny Portugal with us in April 2023. Along the way, we’ll discover the charms of Lisbon, meandering its cobblestone streets, oceanfront promenade and quaint bay area. In Evora, we’ll explore the Roman ruins before traveling
to the scenic “Silver Coast,” dotted with charming villages and castles. Indulge in Portugal’s cuisine, including delicious cod fish, pasties de nata (egg tarts), and very good regional wines. Unearth a wealth of hand-made crafts, like the famed azulejo hand- painted tiles and unique items made of cork. Be swept away by melancholy Fado music and travel with us to the Algarve region’s soft, sandy beaches and classic fishing villages.
