Celebrate the Good Life on The Seine River
By Judie Karhan
Throughout history, the Seine River has been the subject of artistic expression, including famous impressionist paintings by great artists such as Monet and Renoir. In northern France the river flows sinuously from Paris through scenic countryside and intriguing French ports. A cruise along the Seine with AmaWaterways is the perfect way to celebrate the good life in this region – taking in the culture, art and architecture.
In the town of Andeleys, uncover the history of Chateâu Gaillard, the former stronghold of Richard the Lionheart, which is situated on the chalk cliffs high above the Seine. If you’re so inclined, hike there from the banks of the river, admiring scenic views along the way.
Le Havre, a major port in the Normandy region, is joined to the charming town of Honfleur, renowned for its picturesque harbor. Enjoy a cruise excursion of Honfleur and the Pays d’Auge region, where apple cider, Calvados and pommeau outrank French wine, and take a country drive through Beaumont-en- Auge and Pont L’Eveque.
On the next leg of the journey, visit the historic and unforgettable beaches of Normandy where Allied forces landed during WWII’s D-Day invasion. Trace the history of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. Visit the cemetery at the Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach, or perhaps tour the Gold and Juno beaches in the British and Canadian sectors. For inspiration of a different kind, travel the Romanesque Normandy Abbey Route, which will take you to one of the magnificent historic abbeys of the region.
In medieval Rouen, you can take a walking tour to see the square where Joan of Arc was martyred, as well as the Medieval Quarter and Great Clock, an ornate timepiece dating backing
to the 14th century. Explore Lyon’s-la-Foret, site of a former fortress, or enjoy the delicious flavors of the region on a “Tastes of Normandy” tour.
Vernon displays its own charms. Visit Claude Monet’s home and gardens in Giverny, immortalized in his most beloved
paintings. Wander around his famous gardens and home where he lived for more than four decades, or visit the regal 18th century Chateâu de Bizy, inspired by the opulence of Versailles.
Then travel to Auberge Ravoux, the last home of artist Vincent van Gogh. You may also choose to see the exquisite architecture of the Chateâu Sint-Germian-de-Prés, along with its museum and gardens.
