  PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Celebrate Where You Live
 Michele Van Epps
The Northeast is a beautiful place to live, especially during the summertime. The season is incredibly patriotic with Memorial, Flag, Independence and Labor days all in a row. In New York State, we are very fortunate to have many famous landmarks and natural wonders within driving distance. Whether you’re here for work, school or you have lived here all of your life, you might not have gotten a chance to see each
of these important places in our history. New York has
so much to see and explore, you’ll never run out of unique and exciting experiences. Consider visiting some of these destinations to help celebrate the red, white and blue this summer.
As the state Capital, Albany has an incredible past and exhibits impressive architecture on every corner. The focal point, our Capitol building, was announced complete in 1899 by Theodore Roosevelt. The building, which cost more than $25 million to build even then, includes the famous Million Dollar Staircase which took almost 15 years to construct. Tours of the Capitol are free of charge and last up to one hour. While downtown, remember to check out structures that make our city unique, like the Egg, the Corning Tower, the New York State Museum and, perhaps, the most visually opulent, the D&H Building.
A bit further north, we have two of the most historic sites from the Revolutionary War: Fort Ticonderoga and Saratoga Battlefield. Located on Lake Champlain, Fort Ticonderoga was a critical battlefield in the French and Indian War and eventually housed nearly 13,000 men in American troops during the War for Independence. Not far from Ticonderoga, Saratoga Battlefield is most famously the site where the American Troops defeated the British Army. Visitors of the park can see the historic Nielson and Schuyler Houses and climb the Saratoga Monument, commemorating the British Surrender.
New York holds hundreds of years of stories of our founding fathers passed down generation to generation. Let’s celebrate the state’s rich history and culture. When visiting these famous sites, be sure to set a good example and always be respectful so that future generations can enjoy these landmarks as much as we have. And don’t forget to bring your AAA card on any road trip near or far!
