COMMUNITY BUZZ
Unique Program Helps Alleviate Hunger with Million-Meal Milestone
While the holiday season often inspires people to reach out to those in need, one Capital Region business has captured the spirit of giving year-round.
The Century House in Latham, New York, is well- known for its prime rib dinners, award-winning cuisine, beautiful event venue and boutique hotel. But what you may not know is that for the past 10 years, The Century House has been helping to alleviate hunger through its unique “Enjoy One Share One” program
and its partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.
Earlier this fall, The Century House announced it had reached a significant milestone with the program
– one million meals
provided to help
alleviate hunger in our
community. Managing
Partner Colin DeMers
established Enjoy One
Share One to address
an immediate need in
our community during
the recession of 2009.
The sustainable giving program is simple but
effective: It allows guests to participate without
any additional costs to them. Through the
program, The Century House provides a meal in
honor of every guest who enjoys an entrée in the restaurant or at an event, or who spends a night in one of the hotel rooms.
“Enjoy One Share One has become part of who we are,” said DeMers. “This milestone is bittersweet for The Century House family as the need still exists
within our community and beyond.”
In addition to providing meals through the Regional
Food Bank, staff members from The Century House volunteer their time throughout the year to provide meals at several soup kitchens and community meal events.
DeMers said, “During our first soup kitchen meal, I spoke with a gentleman whom I’d known for years as one of our restaurant guests.
Delighted to see him, I initially thought he was there
to volunteer, but quickly realized he’d fallen on hard times and attended as a guest.”
