As Told by
Donna Wellworth
As a Master Cruise Counselor, I am no stranger to the seas. I was traveling with my daughter- in-law, Cariann. Upon arrival, it was quick and
simple since we had all our paperwork ready, including our passports, COVID tests and Bermuda travel authorization. We boarded the ship and were able to drop off our carry-ons. We had a balcony cabin with twin beds and a lovely sitting area on the terrace to watch the world go by.
Cruising out of Cape Liberty was an easy starting point since no flying was required on my
part. The ship set sail, cruising around
the Statue of Liberty and starting our
adventure. The first couple of days were spent at sea where we could enjoy many of the ship’s amenities, trivia and movies shown on the upper deck.
Clients of mine who had previously
cruised on the Summit had informed me
that Le Petit Chef was a dining must-
do. We picked the lobster night. Le Petit
Chef is a custom 3D table animation art,
where the chef makes your dinner on
your table through animation. It was very
entertaining and a great meal to boot.
There are many places to dine on the
ship, like the Oceanview Café, Mast Grill
and Spa Grill. The Aqua and Retreat suites also have two additional dining opportunities at Luminae and Blu.
When we arrived in Bermuda, it was go time. We took a 20-minute ferry ride which took us to St. George’s,
an old whaling town and the farthest city from the pier. The town is quaint with a cobblestone walkway and
lots of character. We walked through the churches, town hall and stores. After this, we took a cab ride to St. Catherine’s Beach just outside of St. George’s. It is possible to walk, but I prefer to take a taxi. The beach was quiet with 10 people at most at one time.
After wandering around an old fortress, our cab
driver, Ivan, took us to the Swizzle Inn; he had great information and stories to tell on the way. Swizzle Inn is an old tavern in the middle of the island, we stopped for a Rum Swizzle and some food. It was great to just take our time on the island and enjoy our day. The adventure continued with a bus ride to Hamilton. The island is
only 24 miles long and one-mile wide. There were two things I needed to buy while there: some rum to take home and a British version of a Harry Potter book for my nephew. On our way back, we saw the yachts from a race around the world docked in Hamilton.
On the second day, we decided to take it easy with a beach day. We headed to Horseshoe Bay in the morning.
There are many ways to get to Horseshoe beach: taxi, shuttle or bus. We decided we had so much fun with the taxi ride the day before that we would take a taxi again. What a great plan. Our driver, Tony, provided another great ride with stories and information. Once we got to Horseshoe, we rented two chairs and enjoyed our time on the beautiful, soft sand beach. Before heading back to the ship, we also checked out Sea Glass Beach near the pier which has many different colors of sea glass.
Day 3 was our last day on the beach and a great opportunity to discover the pier. We wandered around exploring the forts and shops. We also stopped at a tavern at the pier, listening to island music and having
some drinks and appetizers before we had to leave. Bermuda is a wonderful island for exciting quests with easily accessible transportation to get around and friendly, welcoming people.
As we sailed back to Cape Liberty on our final cruise day, we enjoyed reminiscing with new, wonderful memories of our great adventures.
