EXPLORING RHODES, THE AEGEAN ROSE
The historically steeped port cities of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea hold a deep fascination for travelers. On a seafaring voyage of discovery, each port presents intriguingly diverse images and experiences – and each etches a lasting impression in the heart and soul of the new admirer. Rhodes, Greece is one such island.
Rhodes is blessed with perpetual sunshine and constant, gentle winds. This has been a favorite resort as far back as the days of Julius Caesar and Cicero. Today, it is internationally recognized as much for its cosmopolitan flare as for its antiquity.
The present day city of Rhodes is a medieval/ modern amalgam. Arriving by cruise ship or ferry, the first sight of the island is of the great walls of the medieval city built by the Crusaders. The Old Town of Rhodes is, in fact, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval cities. Its massive fortifications can best be seen by walking the ramparts of the city walls.
Outside the city walls, the new town presents
a contrasting picture with its broad tree-lined avenue, shops, beachside resort hotels, casinos and nightclubs. Aside from its pristine beaches, Rhodes is known for its great shopping. There are good buys to be found in jewelry, leather, carpets, ceramics and handicrafts. When you’re weary of shopping, stroll around Mandráki, a small marina
with Rhodian deer statues at its entrance and surrounding windmills; it is an experience not to
be missed. On the other side of the city, you can visit Rodíni Park, with its strutting peacocks, streams and paths amid oleander bushes, cypress, maple and pine trees. Rodíni is said to be the site of the famous School of Rhetoric, where prominent Greeks and Romans, including Julius Caesar, Cato the Younger, Cicero, Pompey, Brutus, Cassius and Marc Antony studied.
Around the island, there are numerous archaeological sites to explore – the acropolis of
Lindos being one of the most frequented. The acropolis stands on a flat-topped cliff that drops sheer to the sea far below and overlooks the pretty village of Lindos with its tiny harbor.
Rhodes is a port of call on many Aegean and eastern Mediterranean cruise ship itineraries, and it’s little wonder. Sometimes referred to as the “Island
of Roses,” it is one of the most picturesque Greek islands. Windmills create the perfect backdrop for white-washed buildings, flowering hillsides, and the blue Aegean Sea, which sparkles brilliantly under the golden rays of the sun.
