TRAVEL
ON THE ROAD IN GREAT BRITAIN
TRAVEL WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST®
TM
By Dorothy Crouch
Embarking upon a road-trip, motor-coach tour of Britain affords the experience of seeing places where early historic roots run deep, yet progress and contemporary style thrive. The region’s ancient Anglo-Saxon culture is important to understanding its current role in the world and influence in the modern era. Hitting the road to explore the British countryside and visit with locals provides a comprehensive view of this region, which once ruled the world, yet remains a powerful influence today.
London’s fascinating attractions allow access
to countless activities. Now a vibrant modern metropolis, London retains the feeling of a capital city that was once the center of the world. As the central figure of the center of the world, the Queen is expected to reside on a property suitable for a fairy tale. Though Windsor Castle houses British royalty,
it is open to visitors who are interested in taking a guided tour. As the oldest and largest castle in the world to be inhabited today, it has now served as the royal home for nearly a millennium and was built around 1070 by William the Conqueror. Prior to departing from London, visitors who want to see
the city’s other famous attractions should visit Piccadilly Circus, Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London, where guests
can admire the Crown Jewels.
The quaint Cotswolds region affords the
opportunity to explore villages that were built during the Middle Ages. Named for the wolds – or rolling hills – that comprise the area, the Cotswolds were famous for the wool upon which the economy depended. Bampton, the town made famous by “Downton Abbey,” allows travelers who are fans of the show to walk in the footsteps of their favorite turn-of-the-century, British aristocratic family.
Wales’ natural beauty comprises seaside towns along relaxing beaches and mountains that rise toward the clouds. The beaches of Wales are surrounded by dunes and filled with rock pools, perfect for admiring the natural wonders in this peaceful region. Adventurers have been known to zip line over the vast landscape for an incomparable view of nature’s splendor.
Though Edinburgh is known for its rich history, it has evolved into a captivating city that also boasts a serene countryside. While this capital affords a taste of city life, its access to Scotland’s exciting outdoor activities and fascinating cultural traditions set it apart from other areas of the country. Scotland’s golf culture is evident and enthusiasts can hit the greens at Musselburgh Golf Club and Muirfield, which are located within the vicinity of Edinburgh. If visiting
during August, seeing the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a uniquely Scottish experience, which includes nearly one thousand musicians, pipers, drummers, singers and dancers.
The historical charm and vibrant cities of Britain offer an array of experiences to satisfy every type of traveler. Beware, as the one problem with traveling to Britain is the desire to return one day and learn more about this fascinating region.
