ON SAFARI WITH ALEXANDER+ROBERTS
Africa’s Big Five and the Great Migration
Tell your friends or family that you’re going on safari and two phrases will inevitably come up: The Big Five and the Great Migration!
Coined more than a century ago, the Big Five refers to five animals that were especially prized
by 19th-century hunters. Although both the elephant and rhino are included, the term has nothing to do with size. Rather, these were the animals that were the most dangerous to track and hunt. Rounding out this list are lions, highly social, apex predators; Cape buffalo, quick and fierce when provoked; and leopards – master stalkers that are most active at night.
Today’s travelers are still stalking the Big Five, though armed with digital cameras rather than rifles! With an unfenced boundary along Kruger National Park, the 60,000-acre Manyeleti Private Game Reserve in South Africa is prime Big Five territory. With limits on the number of visitors, Alexander+Roberts guests are assured of privacy as they set out with expert safari guides to track the Big Five as well as cheetah, antelope, zebra, giraffe and hyena.
Across the Serengeti, the Great Migration is a yearlong phenomenon that unfolds as millions of animals move in a clockwise ellipse in search of food and water. Some 300,000 zebras lead the way every spring, heading north from the Ndutu Plains. Close behind are nearly two million wildebeest and other mammals – with fierce predators like lion and cheetah following in their wake. By late summer, these herds have reached the Mara River – where river crossings provide some of the most dramatic scenes of the Great Migration.
Unique among luxury travel companies, Alexander+Roberts shifts its safari operations based upon these seasonal movements. From November to March, when the herds are in the southern Serengeti, guests stay close by at the stylish Lemala Ndutu Camp. In late summer, the company shifts its guests to the exceptional Lemala Mara Camp, set close to the Mara River – yet far enough away so as not to interrupt wildebeest as they gather en masse along the steep banks. This is the heart of the best game-viewing area in the northern Serengeti and a wildlife paradise when the migration arrives!
Ask your AAA travel agent about these luxury adventures in East and Southern Africa. With no more than 16 guests, or on a Private or Custom Safari, you’ll thrill to unmatched game viewing.
