OF COPENHAGEN
Copenhagen, Denmark, which lies at the south- western arm of the Baltic Sea, welcomes voyagers entering its harbor with many delightful scenes, including the royal Amalienborg Palace and half- timbered houses lining Christianshavn Canal. At the harbor’s edge, staring out to sea for her beloved sailor’s return, sits the bronze statue of the Little Mermaid, a timeless Hans Christian Andersen fairy-tale figure that has become a symbol of Copenhagen.
The storybook charm of the city is captured perfectly by the famous Little Mermaid statue, but Tivoli Gardens is one of its greatest attractions. The amusement park first opened in 1843 and it continues to be one of the most treasured land- marks in all of Europe.
Venturing into the city and beyond, it becomes clear what inspired Hans Christian Andersen to write his fairy tales. With its quaint cottages, tiny hamlets, castles and ancient forts, its sea-wrapped landscape lush and lovely, Denmark is truly a fabled land. Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, dates back to the 1100s. While historically and architecturally impressive, it is also a modern, fashionable city. Indeed, it is considered to be
one of the liveliest cities in all of Europe.

Copenhagen presents visitors with an amazing array of cultural riches. In the “City of Towers” one can explore historic castles, quaint villages and unusual offshore islands. During the summer months, residents bask in the endless sunlight at sidewalk cafes and outdoor pubs.
The changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace is another sight to behold. Amalienborg Palace,
the royal family’s winter residence, is a major architectural work and probably the most out- standing piece of rococo architecture in Denmark.
Kronborg Castle is another attraction not to be missed. The castle is situated on the sea in Elsinore (Helsinger) and in clear weather you can get a magnificent view of Sweden across the sound.
One of the best ways to see beautiful Copenhagen is on a boat tour of the harbor and the old canals. These 60-minute guided tours take visitors through all parts of the old city and pass many of the most famous sights.
It is said that Danes are among the most fun-loving people in the world, so it’s not surprising that the prevailing mood of Copenhagen is lighthearted friendliness. This is, perhaps, what makes the city so charming.
