SCOTLAND: LAND OF CASTLES
TRAVEL WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST®
TM
By Dorothy Crouch
The wealth of experiences offered by Scotland includes rich historic features and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, located in cities that boast castles, cobblestones and enviable natural wonders.
During the Victorian era, Glasgow had grown as a center of modernity and charm. The city continues to attract visitors seeking a charming, cosmopolitan Scottish metropolis. Local, world-renowned architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work can be seen throughout Glasgow, affording visitors a glimpse into the city’s homegrown creative minds and history of extraordinary artistry. Other global artistic influences can be seen through visits to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Burrell Collection, Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery.
Glasgow is a shopping enthusiast’s city, as it
is home to Style Mile, which comprises the pedestrians-only Sauchiehaill Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street. The five floors of Princes Square boast a selection of luxury goods, while weekends are reserved for The Barras – a street market that takes place in the city’s East End.
Contrasting the urbane character of Glasgow, Edinburgh offers a fascinating city culture, yet also reveals a rich, slower countryside. While this capital affords a taste of city life, its access to Scotland’s
exciting outdoor activities and fascinating cultural traditions set it apart from other areas of the country.
Known for its golf culture, Scotland attracts players and enthusiasts from around the world. Two of the country’s most famous courses, Musselburgh Golf Club and Muirfield, are located near Edinburgh, adding to the allure of this city. Travelers who visit during the month of August might have the opportunity to witness the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, featuring nearly one thousand musicians, pipers, drummers, singers and dancers who create a fantastic display on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. The event opens the August festival season, which also includes the Edinburgh Art Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh Mela and Edinburgh International Book Festival.
Scotland’s first university, St. Andrews, was founded in the 15th century. The third oldest university in the English-speaking world,
St. Andrews was the educational home of Benjamin Franklin, Rudyard Kipling, Sir James Black, and Prince William and the former Catherine Middleton – the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. In addition to being the home of Scotland’s oldest university, the town of St. Andrews is the site in which the modern game of golf was first played.
Captivating visitors of different backgrounds from around the world, Scotland offers an array of attractions. From its buzzing cities to serene countryside, Scotland is an extraordinary destination for 2016.
