BERMUDA – A WORLD AWAY NEARBY
In a world where neon signs, high-rise buildings and traffic jams are a fact of life, it’s good to know that a place exists where you really can get away from it all. A mere two hours by jet from the coast of North Carolina lies the sparkling gem that is Bermuda.
Bermuda, a British Overseas Territory, sits in
the North Atlantic Ocean and forms a necklace of islands and inlets connected by reefs and bridges. The 22 square miles of pink, powdery beaches and turquoise waters, combined with the warm semi-tropical climate, are a natural magnet for visitors.
In Bermuda, there are no skyscrapers and only
a few reminders of the 21st century. Bermuda is clean, friendly, and well-preserved. Some of its buildings date all the way back to the 17th century. Streets are lined with Bermuda stone and cedar architecture, scalloped cottages topped with whitewashed roofs, beautifully manicured parks and gardens bursting with blooms.
Cruise ships call at Bermuda’s major ports – Hamilton, St. George’s and the West End. In Hamilton, visitors enjoy browsing the Front
Street boutiques selling British wares, as well as strolling among lovely parks and churches. In
St. George’s, visitors find a storybook place, filled with narrow alleys that wind past historic buildings and charming houses. Established in 1612, St. George’s is the oldest continuously inhabited English town in the New World. It is today a UNESCO World Heritage site and visitors here can explore 400 years of British colonial history.
For a bird’s-eye view of the island, climb the many steps that lead to the top of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and enjoy the scenery that unfolds from this
cast-iron structure built in 1846. Visitors can easily explore the west side of the island by ferry, or the east by taxi. The West End is a multi-million-dollar cruise ship dock, park and visitor’s village. The Maritime Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts recovered from shipwrecks off the coast of Bermuda, is the focal point of the West End.
Bermuda’s numerous golf courses, tennis courts, riding stables, and a hiking trail following an old railroad route keep visitors busy, as do water sport activities. All summer long the calendar is crammed with dinghy races and sailing regattas.
