QUEBEC CITY – CANADA WITH A FRENCH ACCENT
Quebec City, European in atmosphere and appearance, is carved into the bluffs above the St. Lawrence River. This is one of North America’s oldest cities, first settled by France in 1535, and it is the only walled city north of Mexico. Today, Quebec City still emanates a strong sense of French influence, evidenced in its language, architecture and cuisine. One of its most imposing sights is the historic Château Frontenac, which sits atop a cape overlooking the St. Lawrence River and Dufferin Terrace.
Visitors to Quebec City especially enjoy walking along the narrow streets of the Old Town, situated on the bank of the St. Lawrence River on the city harbor. This neighborhood, established over 400 years ago as a permanent French settlement, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Quebec has been here since 1647.
Walking the illuminated streets of the Petit-Champlain District and Place Royale is also an enjoyable pastime. The square was the site of the first per- manent French settlement in North America and echoes the voices of history. Place Royale is home to Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, the oldest stone church in North America, built in 1688. With its stone homes, gabled roofs, chimneys and firewalls rising above the rooftops, the architecture in this district is certainly reminiscent of France.
In the Old Port area of Quebec City, winter visitors are treated to incredible views of the ice-flowing St. Lawrence River while strolling the Promenade. The quaint streets of the Old Port invite shoppers into its antique shops, art galleries and boutiques.
One of the many great museums of Quebec is Musée de la Civilsation. The museum houses interactive and participatory exhibits, one of which explores the cultures of Quebec’s native populations. For a taste of Quebecois history, take in the state-of-the-art sound and light show at Musée du Fort.
Rue Saint-Jean, a gateway to Old Quebec, is also a highlight of a visit to the city. The area includes a skating rink in Place d’Youville, shops, restaurants, concert halls, and historic buildings.
Of course, all of this city exploration can lead to thoughts of food, and in that arena as well Quebec City does not disappoint. Be sure to try the quintessential dishes of the region, such as traditional Quebecois poutine, Montreal-style bagels, and savory tourtiere (meat pies).
