THE BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK EXPERIENCE
The Southwest is home to some of America’s most magnificent national parks. At beautiful Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah, natural forces have created astonishing vistas of intensely colorful limestone rocks formations shaped by water and wind.
This has given the sediment an estimated 60 varieties of colors ranging from white to vermilion. Giant natural amphitheaters afford spectacular views created by an explosion of color – reds, oranges and white.
Evidence indicates that these lands sustained tribes dating back to 10,000 years ago. In the 1850s, Mormons discovered the region and began settling here in great numbers before moving on to nearby states. Originally declared a National Monument in 1923, Bryce Canyon moved up to National Park status in 1928, and its lands are now graced with stunning geological wonders. Forests and meadows provide habitats for diverse animal life, from birds and small mammals to foxes, mule deer, bobcats, black bears, and even mountain lions.
There are many scenic walking and driving tours
within the landscapes of Bryce Canyon, and most visitors take advantage of the free Ranger Led Program. The park also features a free shuttle system for exploration. With the distinction
of having some of the
world’s least polluted
air, visitors enjoy the visibility of three states up to 200 miles away. Slot canyons with rims as high as 9,000 feet and intricately formed hoodoos make for memorable explorations throughout the park.
A one-hour walking tour will take you along the rim of Bryce Amphitheater, which is particularly beautiful at sunset. If you choose to drive the rim, there are 13 spectacular viewpoints to take in the beauty of this sprawling park, as well as marked trailheads to hike along.
Bryce Canyon’s Bristlecone Loop is one of the many popular hiking trails, as is Queens Garden and Tower Bridge Trail, for taking in magnificent
sunset views at Sunset Point. The park also features more advanced hiking trails. At nighttime, Bryce Canyon’s skies light up with stars, making for exceptional stargazing experiences. Public stargazing gatherings and evening astronomy programs are offered, and in June the Annual Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival becomes a
major event in the park.
Ranger-led horseback riding excursions, offered
April through October, are another unique way to explore the canyon, as are the winter activities of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Equipment rentals are available in many park locations.
