    AMAZING WILDERNESS
Yellowstone National Park’s unique hydrothermal and geologic features have attracted travelers worldwide since it became America’s first national park, established in 1872. It was later made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
With 2.2 million acres of wilderness to explore, Yellowstone stands as one of North America’s greatest assets – home to an astonishing array
of wildlife including bears, wolves, bison, elk, antelope, bald eagles and many other majestic creatures. In fact, there are over 67 species of mammals and 330 species of birds within the park.
This sprawling land of lakes, geysers, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges actually covers three states – Wyoming, Idaho and Montana – although most of the park lies in Wyoming.
There are many ways to explore Yellowstone. Certainly, one of the most popular experiences in the park is witnessing the geologic activity. Over half of the world’s active geysers are found here, and as many as 700 are active. Waiting for the next eruption of Old Faithful is a pastime that most visitors can’t resist.
Hiking is, of course,
another option in this
premier wilderness area,
which offers more than
900 miles of hiking trails.
(But beware of changing
weather conditions, as they
can be unpredictable.)
Many visitors also take
advantage of the park’s
interactive ranger-led
walks and talks during the summer months –
an activity kids especially enjoy. Boating, fishing, bicycling and horseback riding are other options in the park. Two-hour horseback rides are offered by Yellowstone National Park Lodges, and guided overnight backcountry trips are provided by private, licensed outfitters.
Many visitors to Yellowstone choose to camp within the park, but hotel- and cabin-style accommodations are also available. Yellowstone National Park Lodges operates nine lodges from late spring through fall. In the winter months, only two are open – Old Faithful
Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel.
If you are interested in exploring wilderness areas
beyond Yellowstone National Park, the John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway, a scenic 80-mile roadway, connects Yellowstone with Grand Teton National Park to the south in Wyoming. In Grand Teton National Park, enjoy spectacular views of the Grand Teton mountains, which rise as high as 13,770 feet above sea level. The park’s high alpine terrain and pristine rivers and lakes provide habitat for extraordinary wildlife, and the rugged nature of the landscape makes for great hiking adventures.
