The sun always seems to be shining in Aruba. With the least amount of rainfall in the Southern Caribbean, pleasant 82-degree temperatures and calming trade winds, this Dutch Caribbean island basks in the glory of its great weather throughout the year.
In the capital city of Oranjestad, colonial Dutch buildings are a charming reminder of the island’s ancestral ties with Europe, but you’ll find that the fun-loving Arubans are actually more Latin in spirit. Situated just 18 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Aruba is strongly influenced by Latin America. Arubans love to dance, and hypnotic calypso rhythms sway them into a festive mood. With a mix of over 90 nationalities from more than 130 countries, the great cultural diversity and history of this island makes it a unique destination. Its global fusion cuisine mainstays of fish, meats and rice lends itself well to the touch of rich Latin and African flavors.
Aruba is known for its lovely white sand beaches. The two-mile strip known as Palm Beach is teeming with high-rise hotels, restaurants and bars, and Latin rhythms waft from the terraces. Palm Beach, also known as Eagle Beach, is the widest and most breathtaking beach on the island. Clear Caribbean waters and pristine white sand draw visitors, but shaded picnic areas and ample parking keep them there.
The beach offers a unique and special attraction a few months a year. Four turtle species – Leatherback, Loggerhead, Green and Hawksbill – choose Eagle Beach as their nesting place. They typically hatch around sunset, so stick around after the day’s sunbathing and water sports activities such as diving and snorkeling to observe this unusual sighting.
Another one of Aruba’s many sights of interest is its volcanic formation, which stands in the center of the isle. About 540 feet above sea level, Hooiberg (Dutch for haystack) provides a sweeping view of the island and beyond. On clear days, Venezuela is visible in the distance. Climbing the Hooiberg is a bit of an adventure – there are about 587 steps to the top of the hill. Although not the highest point on the island, visitors feel like they’re on top of the world from this vantage point.
If you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll find plenty of that too, with numerous restaurants serving an array of local and internationally inspired dishes. If you enjoy gambling, try your luck at the Alhambra Casino, said to be one of the nicest in the Dutch Antilles.
