New Zealand, often called “a world in miniature,” packs the scenic wonders of the world into an area no greater in size than Colorado. Thousands of miles of unspoiled coastline contain beaches to rival those of Hawaii and the Caribbean – without the crowds. Lush, green pastures dotted with 70 million sheep could have been bodily lifted from Ireland, and New Zealand’s majestic snow-covered alps have earned the country the title “Switzerland of the South Pacific.”
Roaring geysers and steaming thermal pools of Rotorua create images of Yellowstone, but the dense, moss-laden forests of New Zealand’s Westland are those of the Amazon without the oppressive heat.
The skirl of bagpipes and churches of Dunedin testify to its Scottish heritage, while cosmopolitan Wellington, with its pioneer wooden homes and narrow, winding streets is often likened to San Francisco.
The ice-carved fiords of New Zealand’s Fiordland transport the visitor to Norway, and the volcanic symmetry of Mount Egmont in the North Island province of Taranaki mirrors Japan’s Mount Fuji.
The cities and villages where most of New
Zealand’s tiny population of people live are equally diverse due to the influence of settlers from many parts of the world and the distinctive culture of the indigenous, native Maori people.
Auckland is the gateway to New
Zealand for the majority of American
visitors. This sprawling city in the
northern half of the North Island is
the country’s largest metropolis.
It is bounded by two natural
harbors – on the Pacific side is
the island-studded Hauraki Gulf
and the sparkling waters of the
Waitemata Harbour, and on the western side are the sheltered inlets of the Manukau Harbour facing the Tasman Sea.
Christchurch, known as the “most English city outside of England,” is the South Island’s largest city. Home to stunning gardens, cathedrals and parks, the city affords visitors access to many different activities such as golfing, bungee jumping, mountain biking, wind surfing, rafting and hot air balloon rides.
Upon reaching Queenstown, visitors are struck by the crisp, clean alpine scenery. The beauty of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains provide magnificent examples of nature’s fine work. Hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers must venture into
the New Zealand countryside toward the Southern Alps, glaciers, forests and Mount Cook, New Zealand’s most famous national park. Visitors can also cruise through the serenity of Milford Sound and Fiordland National Park.
