Visiting Europe for the first time, I decided to try Trafalgar’s Costsaver Gems of France itinerary, which includes Normandy Beach. I felt this would be a great introduction to Europe and I was right – it hit the most important highlights in this region of France. As their tagline says: Essentials by us. Tailored by you. I arrived in Paris early in the morning, then met
the tour director, who was very knowledgeable and experienced. That night we dined at a little restaurant in Paris where the food was unbelievable. After breakfast, we headed to Roen. This is a charming town, with cathedrals and so much history. We visited the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake and the church that was built in memory of her after the king realized he had made a huge mistake.
After Roen, we moved on to Honfleur. This little town is right on the water, with beautiful views, cobblestone streets and cafes everywhere you turn. We drove to Deauville for the night, which is known for horse racing.
After breakfast we
headed for Normandy
and Landing Beaches.
Everyone who visits France
should make this a stop!
Departing Normandy, we
went to Mont St Michel.
This is truly a gem! An
abbey sits atop this rocky
islet, home to 50 residents,
restaurants and hotels. We
then headed to Saint Malo
for our two-night stay in
the Loire Valley. While in Saint Malo, we visited the walled city and explored the shops.
Today was quite the surprise with the Château de Chenonceau and a wine tour. Château de Chenonceau, situated on the Cher River, is a 16th century chateau with beautiful gardens, Renaissance art and furniture. Afterward we stopped at a winery for a tour and wine tasting. From the Loire Valley it was on to Paris. We stopped at the Château Chambord, then headed
to Paris for two nights.
We toured Paris by motor coach, then enjoyed
time on our own for the rest of the day. A Christmas market was open, so we went there for a while, then explored the city. We saw the Eiffel Tower,
Arc De Triomphe, The Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral. In the evening we ate dinner in a small restaurant right on Champs Elysees and went on
a Seine cruise to see the “City of Light.” It was a magical way to end a great week in Paris!
