LEHIGH VALLEY THE DELAWARE & LEHIGH NATIONAL HERITAGE CORRIDOR
For many people in the Lehigh Valley, the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor is right in their backyard, but many still wonder what the D&L does. Established by an act of Congress in 1988, the D&L is a 501(c) 3 non-profit that preserves the historic pathway that once carried anthracite coal and iron from Wilkes-Barre to Philadelphia. The D&L Trail network connects residents and visitors to our heritage through education, nature, cultural and community events, recreation
and interpretation of our nationally significant industrial heritage.
Headquartered in Easton at Hugh Moore Park, along with its affiliate the National Canal Museum, the D&L works year round on numerous projects throughout Luzerne, Carbon, Northampton, Lehigh and Bucks County. One of its biggest goals is to connect the 165-mile D&L Trail by 2020. When finished it will be the longest trail in Pennsylvania and closest to one of America’s population center.
The D&L is also the originator of Tales of the Towpath, a Pennsylvania Accredited educational program that is taught in 72 elementary schools instilling reverence for our regional heritage, as well as the principals of science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics (STEM). Get Your Tail on the Trail
is a regional wellness initiative in partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network that has received the American Trails, Trails for Health
Award and encourages people to get outside and log miles from April through November. At the National Canal Museum, visitors get to experience the story of the D&L firsthand as they ride Pennsylvania’s only mule-drawn canal boat – the Josiah White II. The National Canal Museum also holds Immersion Days field trips and programming at the Freemansburg Canal Education Center for students from the surrounding school districts. The D&L holds three major fundraisers each year; its annual Spring Dinner and Auction takes place on April 28th at the Northampton Country Club, Bike for the Bridge in Jim Thorpe on May 1st, and the D&L Heritage Half Marathon Run/Walk, which will take place on November 6th.
As the warm weather starts to set in this year we encourage you to “Find your D&L,” whether it be on one of the trails throughout the Lehigh Valley, at the Canal Museum and Boat Ride, or by attending one of the many events the D&L hosts throughout the year in support of their work. The National Canal Museum is located at 2750 Hugh Moore Park Road, Easton, PA 18042 and is open from June 4 - October 2, 2016. Hours of operation are Wednesday - Sunday 11:30 a.m. -
4:30 p.m. Admission (includes canal boat ride and canal museum): Adults: $12, Seniors and members of the military: $11, Children (3-15): $9, Children under 3: Free. Canal boat tours are 45 minutes
long and leave the dock at noon, 1:00, 2:00 and
