DANUBE RIVER CRUISING WITH AMAWATERWAYS
River cruising is all the rage, but is it really as good as reported? With AmaWaterways the answer is a definite yes!
There are AmaWaterways sailings throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. The ships are all richly appointed, expertly staffed and comfortably intimate.
My river-cruising adventure began with a flight to Budapest for the seven-night Melodies of the Danube cruise aboard the AmaSonata.
Day 1 – When I arrived in Budapest, I was driven to the beautiful, five-star Corinthia Hotel Budapest, which is centrally located in Buda. This clean, vibrant city’s restaurants, parks and thermal spas left a lasting positive impression.
Day 2 – My group started out on our first excursion – a city tour of Budapest. Budapest has two sides, Buda and Pest, separated by the Danube and connected by the Chain Bridge. After lunch, we boarded the coach for Vienna – home of Mozart – to meet up with our ship and crew.
Day 3 – The Danube River does not flow directly through downtown Vienna, therefore we saw the city’s highlights via coach along Ringstrasse. We also walked through the city, seeing the Lipizzaner horses and St. Stephens Cathedral. At Hotel Sacher, I sampled Sacher Torte, a sinfully delicious chocolate cake. While seeing monuments and gardens, I dis- covered the main Christmas market, shopping and gluhwein!
Day 4 – Enjoying our final Vienna day, I took a leisurely bike tour along the Danube to the Klosterneuburg Abbey. During the afternoon, we cruised the Danube to Krems, Vienna for a wine tasting on the beautiful grounds of a thousand-year-old vineyard.
Day 5 – After arriving in the Wachau Valley’s beautiful, quaint little town of Durnstein, we hiked to Burgruine Dürnstein, castle ruins set high above the town, which afford amazing views. Our day ended with a scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley.
Day 6 – During a bike tour of Linz, Austria, we visited St. Mary’s Cathedral and the picturesque Main Square. In the afternoon, we went to Salzburg – reminiscent of “The Sound of Music.” Walking through the Mirabell Palace and Gardens for an Austrian beer and potato soup was unforgettable.
Day 7 – From Passau, Germany to Erlau I embarked upon a bike tour that was more than 13 kilometers each way! While cruising to our last port, Vilshofen, we enjoyed a Bavarian lunch before arriving in this charming little German town.
The Ama in AmaSonata should stand for “amazing.” Each crew member was personable, recognized every guest and remembered the smallest detail to provide an unforgettable journey.
