TRAVEL WITH SOMEONE YOU TRUST®
TRAVEL
AUTUMN SPLENDOR ON THE
EASTERN SEABOARD
By Judie Karhan
In autumn, when the crowds of summer have dwindled and gentle breezes rustle leaves of brilliant orange, red and copper-toned hues, the North Atlantic Coast signals travelers like a beacon, warning them to behold the glory of the season, as winter is fast approaching.
Nowhere does autumn descend more vividly than in New England and Eastern Canada. This is
a perfect time to explore this region’s Colonial towns, historic cities and scenic coastline – by land or by sea.
Cruise ship sailings and tours in the fall are typically made between Boston or New York City and Montreal, Canada, and also include Quebec City, Canada.
Montreal is a unique city that blends French and English cultures with passion and pride. In old Montreal, cobblestone streets lead the way to town squares and 17th- and 18th-century churches. The town’s old stone buildings have been renovated into a variety of more contemporary edifices such as restaurants, shops and galleries.
Quebec City, European in atmosphere and
appearance, is carved into the bluffs overlooking the St. Lawrence River. One of the city’s most regal sights is the hotel Chateau Frontenac, which sits atop a cape overlooking the river. Visitors to Quebec City especially enjoy walking along the narrow streets of Old Town, where buildings that are two centuries old now house restaurants, apartments and small stores.
Stops within the Canadian borders include Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sydney, the gateway to scenic Cape Breton Island, is within convenient proximity to major attractions on the island, including the world famous Cabot Trail, Fortress of Louisbourg, and the village of Baddeck. Halifax welcomes visitors with its beautifully restored waterfront buildings, which recall the city’s centuries-old maritime heritage. Museums, galleries, historic sites and lovely gardens are a few of the many enjoyments in this town.
Continuing the journey down the coastline to the United States, travelers can take in the rugged beauty of Bar Harbor, Maine’s rocky coast. This region is home to Acadia National Park, where
there are more than 120 miles of marked trails for hiking and numerous lakes for canoeing.
Of course, a trip to New England would not be complete without exploring historic Boston, hailed as the Cradle of American Independence. Travel back to Revolutionary Boston by following the famed Freedom Trail to 16 sites and structures of historic importance in downtown Boston and Charlestown, including the Paul Revere House, Old State House and Granary Burying Ground.
