DESTINATION ARIZONA: THE GRAND CANYON AND SEDONA
America’s Southwest is a stark, beautiful landscape, painted in hues of dusty red and orange. Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona is essentially the pièce de résistance of this incredible ecosystem, and it is perhaps the most amazing geological formation in the world. The Grand Canyon, carved out over the eons by the Colorado River, affords visitors mesmerizing scenery in a kaleidoscope of colors that dance with light and shadow against the canyon’s massive walls. It’s easy to be hypnotized by the towering rock formations, lush pine forests, isolated lakes and expansive flowering meadows.
In Grand Canyon Village, on the canyon’s South Rim, visitors find several accommodations to choose from, as well as a Market Plaza with a general store and the Visitor Center/Mather Point, home to the transit center for the park’s free shuttle bus system. For a different experience, you can see the other side of the Grand Canyon by paying a visit to the North Rim, which is typically only open from May 15 through Oct. 15 because of snow. This rim also features lodging, restaurants and shops.
South of the Grand Canyon lies Sedona, Arizona, a magnet for writers, holistic healers and artists. In Sedona there are over 40 art galleries exhibiting works ranging from Western and Southwestern to contemporary and modern art.
