STUNNING SCENERY AND GOURMET CUISINE DEFINE SWITZERLAND
Evoking images of alpine ski jaunts or Heidi,
the idea of traveling to Switzerland seems, like
its chocolate, sweet. The people of this Western European country are warm, inviting and extremely diverse. Sharing borders with Italy, France and Germany, Switzerland’s population believes in “unity, but not uniformity.” Defined through its diversity, Swiss culture includes influences from its neighbors and these characteristics are found in their cuisine.
Widely known as Swiss cheese, Emmentaler
was first produced in the Emme Valley of Berne, Switzerland’s capital city. Emmentaler is a large tourist draw to the region, as the tourism board provides planning information for the Emmentaler Käseroute or Emmental cheese route. Tourists
are encouraged to rent a bicycle and embark upon one- or two-day excursions, which are outlined by the tourist board and include stops
at the town’s historic dairies, cheese-trading sites, accommodations and points of interest.
Pure and delicious Swiss chocolate is almost as popular as the country’s cheese. Zurich’s Old Town had been the location for much 19th-century advancement in production, including Rodolphe Lindt’s conche, a machine that yields a finer, more
exquisite chocolate. Though Rodolphe Lindt’s legacy lives
on through popular chocolate brand Lindt & Sprüngli, a different chocolatier from
the Swiss Alps also
produces an exceptional
product. In 2012,
National Geographic
listed Teuscher in the
number one position
on its list of the “Top 10
Best Chocolatiers in the
World.” Proudly using no
chemicals, additives or
preservatives, Teuscher
has manufactured a variety of fine chocolates for more than 70 years.
During travel to Switzerland, it’s impossible to ignore the influence of food on the country’s culture. Many tour companies, such as Insight Vacations, showcase this cuisine within their Switzerland itineraries. Each October, Zurich transforms into
INSIGHT
a gastronomy-focused city during Gourmesse,
a culinary fair offering tastings, competitions, seminars and presentations by renowned chefs. The Gourmesse is a yearly event at Zurich’s Kongresshaus that allows guests to purchase many of the fine foods and products that are presented, therefore bring a lot of francs, and your appetite!

Peace has long been the policy of this majestic country. With the skier-dotted Matterhorn in the distance and unbroken reflections of Zürich’s modern buildings and Old Town art galleries in the lake, it’s no wonder that the world’s cares are left outside of Switzerland’s borders.
