Aloha!
I recently had the opportunity to travel to a destination that many people have on their bucket list ... the island of Oahu. This island is filled with history, culture, beautiful beaches and coastlines, and fantastic food.
The group trip began in Honolulu, which has many historic attractions. We toured the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and Iolani Palace. Another must-see historic site is Pearl Harbor, which honors those who have served in the military.
From Honolulu, we traveled to the North Shore. The drive along the east coast of the island is a must-see attraction. Beautiful coastlines feature hiking trails, lighthouses and white sand beaches. This day we stopped at the 4,000-acre Kuola Ranch, which spans three valleys. Many activities are offered here, including ATV tours, horseback riding and ziplining. We next visited the Polynesian Cultural Center. What a great way to learn more about the culture and history of the Polynesians.
During our time here we enjoyed demonstrations, singing, comedy, a canoe ride, and learned about a stick game called Tititorea Maori.
With Wild Side Specialty Tours we were able to snorkel with the dolphins in the ocean, which swam beneath us. I will warn you, this experience is potentially life changing.
While visiting the island, you may want to experience a food tour. We enjoyed a tour guided by Lanai Tabura, winner of Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race.” I can see why Tabura won; he has a wealth of knowledge and is passionate about his people, island and local cuisine.
Where should you stay while touring Oahu?
I would recommend staying at a couple of resorts in different areas of the island, maybe heading
to the North Shore first. Turtle Bay Resort has beautiful accommodations and many activities. Or you may want to stay at the brand new Courtyard by Marriott Oahu North Shore. If you want to be closer to Waikiki, but not in the middle
of everything, consider the Kahala Hotel & Resort. But if you would rather be in the middle of Waikiki, there are many choices, including The Royal Hawaiian, Modern Honolulu, Moana Surfrider, Hilton Hawaiian Village and the Outrigger.
When you return from your trip to Hawaii, you will realize that “aloha” doesn’t just mean “hello,” it embodies the true Hawaiian spirit of treating ourselves and others with love and respect. I truly experienced the meaning and feeling of aloha and I can’t wait to help you experience it as well.
