ESCAPE TO COLORFUL BERMUDA
If you’re ready to escape from your hectic everyday life, head for Bermuda – a place where life takes a turn into the slow lane and troubles melt away in the warmth of the sun.
Nestled in the Atlantic Ocean, 600 miles off the coast of North Carolina, Bermuda forms a necklace of islands and inlets connected by reefs and bridges, with 22 miles of pink, soft sand beaches and clear, sparkling waters.
In Hamilton, St. George’s or at the West End, the first thing you’ll notice about Bermuda is that the people are genuinely friendly. Especially the taxi drivers, who are eager to share with you the history, legends and sights of their island. Taxis are one of the best ways to get around, but if you’d like to get a panoramic view of the island, board one of the many pink and blue buses and see the sights from the Dockyard to St. George’s and all points in between.
Wander through the charming town of Hamilton, with its pastel houses, quaint shops and boutiques. At the Bermuda National Gallery, inside the City Hall, art lovers enjoy seeing works from masters
such as Gainsborough, Georgia O’Keefe and Winslow Homer. Southeast of town, in Paget Parish, is Bermuda Botanical Gardens. This wonder of scents includes the unique Garden for the Blind, designed with supremely fragrant flowers and spices, splashing fountains and textured plants.
Founded in 1612, St. George’s is a storybook town, filled with narrow alleys that wind past historic buildings and charming houses with whitewashed fences and gardens. St. George’s is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visitors here can explore 400 years of British colonial history. You might opt to take a self-guided walking tour of
St. George’s, which begins at the State House (built in 1620, it is the oldest building on the island) and continues to St. Peter’s Church, Town Hall and Bridge House (complete with an art gallery and straw market shop). The tour also stops at the reproduction of the Deliverance – the boat built by colonists after the Sea Venture wrecked on the island in 1609.
At the West End, visit Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse. Built in 1846, the white, cast-iron structure offers an
excellent view of the island. Also be sure to see the Maritime Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts recovered from shipwrecks off Bermuda.
Where culture meets casual.
