CRUISING SOUTH AMERICA’S CHILEAN FJORDS
By Judie Karhan
Sailing along the Cape Horn route of South America, one might capture the intoxicating feeling of being a 17th-century explorer on the brink of discovery, venturing bravely into unknown lands of dramatic, untouched beauty and abundant wildlife. This is no ordinary cruise. It is one of adventure.
The journey begins in Rio de Janeiro, most aptly described as being a city of passion and sensuality. Cariocas, natives of the city, embrace a rhythm of life filled with passionate intensity. The famous Copacabana Beach and other equally inviting white sand beaches of the South Atlantic coastline serve as a playground for these fun-loving people.
The next highlight of the cruise is Buenos Aires, where Old World Argentina blends with a modern and bustling metropolis. This “Paris of the South” flaunts its European heritage. With its cobblestone streets, tree-lined avenues, exciting tango clubs, boutiques, and Parisian-style cafes, there is enough charm in Buenos Aires to dazzle even the most seasoned travelers.
From Buenos Aires, travel southward to Stanley, capital of the Falklands since 1845. Diminutive Stanley lies on the windswept tip of East Falkland
Island. The Falklands long served as a way station for ships bound to and from Cape Horn. Today, travelers increasingly journey to the islands to view their rich assortment of bird and marine life.
Punta Arenas is the gateway to Chilean Patagonia, a maze of fjords, rivers, steppes, and mountains to the north. As your cruise ship enters Chile’s fjord lands, sheer walls of rock rise high above. Glaciers creak and shudder, their tremendous weight grinding over the rock below, continuously sculpting the magnificent Chilean fjords.
Punta Tombo is the most important Megellan Penguins colony within continental Patagonia. Each year, more than a million and a half penguins arrive here to breed. Beyond Punta Tombo is Peninsula Vales, the only known continental breeding place for elephant seals, and it is a habitat for sea lions, southern right whales, and burrowing owls.
Upon exiting the Chilean fjords, cruise passengers are soon greeted by the city of Santiago. Surrounded by the snowcapped Andes, Santiago displays a delightful blend of 19th century European,
Spanish colonial, and modern architecture. In the major downtown shopping area, many streets have become paseos, nicely landscaped and adorned
with sculptures. Over the years, many coffeehouses, wine bars and restaurants have sprung up in Santiago, particularly in the Barrio Bellavista where art galleries and experimental theaters add a bohemian flavor to this lovely old neighborhood.
