CRUISING IN ITALY ABOARD THE AZAMARA JOURNEY By Christina Marangolo, AAA Northampton County Travel Agent
Destination! That’s what it’s all about when you get onboard Azamara Club Cruises. If you are looking
for a fantastic ship with amazing service and fabulous ports of call, this is the cruise line for you. You will be able to experience longer stays, and even overnights in many destinations. The ships are not large, carrying less than 700 guests, so they are able to reach certain ports where larger ships cannot. Azamara itineraries are very unique and attract those who want to go somewhere different.
I flew into Rome and was transferred to the port of Civitavecchia where I was greeted by a friendly staff to assist with a quick check-in for the Azamara Journey. That evening we sailed to Sorrento, Italy, where we would be docked for two full days. I already planned a few things to do before I arrived, and Azamara provided useful information such as maps, restaurant and shopping suggestions. On the first day I took an excursion to Pompeii and the Isle of Capri, and that night enjoyed an “AzAmazing” evening.
This is a special event that takes place on every seven-night or longer sailing (except transatlantic), which introduces passengers to local culture with specialty foods, drinks and live entertainment.
The next day I took a scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast, and because the ship wasn’t departing until late in the evening there was time to explore the
town of Sorrento, where lemon trees grow within the city and there seems to be lemon-flavored everything, including limoncello.
The next port was Giardini Naxos (Taormina) in Sicily, where I visited the Greek Theatre (Teatro Greco) as well as the Duomo. The theatre site affords amazing views of
Mt. Etna, the highest and
largest active volcano in
Europe. I also enjoyed strolling
along Corso Umberto, the main
street in Taormina, where
shopping opportunities are plentiful. We then sailed on to the tiny, very historic island of Malta, where we explored the towns of Naxxar and Mdina with its gardens, palaces and cathedrals.
Overall, this is a perfect vacation option for those who want more included in the cruise price (such as gratuities), who enjoy great food and want to travel to unique destinations. Contact your travel agent at AAA Northampton County to learn
