GRENADA: THE SPICE ISLAND
The scent of nutmeg, cloves, vanilla and cinnamon perfumes the air in sleepy Grenada, nicknamed
the Spice Island for its fertile spice plantations growing nutmeg and mace crops. This is a mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and tropical flowers. Also of special interest on the island are two forts – Fort Frederick, constructed by the French in 1779, and Fort George, Grenada’s oldest fort, established in 1705. For further exploration, hop on a ferry to visit the nearby islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, known especially for their beautiful coral reefs and snorkeling in clear, shallow waters.
St. George’s, Grenada’s 18th-century capital, is said to be one of the prettiest in the West Indies, with a harbor surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and busy, narrow streets lined with shops and cafes.
