The roads to America’s South are paved with history. In grand cities such as Charleston, S.C., where horse-drawn carriages pass centuries-old mansions, you can – at times – feel as though you’ve been transported back a few centuries. In Savannah, Georgia, more than half of the 2,500 buildings have architectural or historic significance. The timeless beauty of these cities is legendary.

Explore the Historic District of
Charleston, which encompasses more than 2,000 buildings, by shopping in the Old City Market or wandering along the Battery, where some of the
settlement’s earliest fortifications were located. A boat trip to Fort Sumter National Historic Park is another pleasant way to enjoy the day.
Just outside the city sits Boone Hall Plantation. This 1681 working plantation is known for its moss-draped,
three-quarter-mile Avenue of Oaks and original slave cabins. Boone Hall is the only plantation in the South Carolina Low Country to offer a live presentation of the unique Gullah Culture, which was adapted by African slaves.
Cosmopolitan and laid-back,
southern-sweet Savannah manages to gracefully blend trendy downtown boutiques
and microbreweries with a backdrop of centuries- old architecture. Its many neighborhood garden
squares, with their shady oak trees, flowers and fountains, make walking city streets an absolute pleasure. In fact, there are more than 20 city squares in which to explore museums, churches, mansions and monuments. Savannah is also home to famous forts of the Revolutionary and Civil War era.
Venturing beyond Savannah, visit the 8,000-acre Biltmore Estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Ashville, N.C. Built by George Vanderbilt, this sprawling residence mesmerizes visitors with its magnificent architecture. Visitors are even invited
