An E-Z Way to Pay
TM
When the New York State Thruway Authority implemented E-ZPass tolling 25 years ago, it was considered one of the great innovations in the transportation industry. Today, more than 34 million vehicles in 16 states have E-ZPass tags.
E-ZPass is the fastest, most cost- effective way to travel New York’s toll roads, bridges and tunnels, especially as the state expands cashless tolling. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced
that by the end of 2020, toll booths will be removed from all 570 miles of the New York State Thruway. This is a good thing, as analyses have shown significant improvements in travel time and reduced fuel consumption.
Once cashless tolling goes live, E-ZPass will be the least expensive way to pay tolls in New York state. Drivers without E-ZPass will receive toll charges by mail with a higher rate.
Whether you already have an E-ZPass or plan to sign up, AAA encourages consumers to follow these steps.
• List all your current license plates and vehicles in your E-ZPass account. If your
tag isn’t read, or if you forget it in another vehicle, the system will use the license plate

to post the toll to your account. If your plate is not listed on your account, authorities may issue a violation for toll evasion.
• Properly mount your E-ZPass tag on your windshield to ensure an accurate read. AAA strongly discourages drivers from holding their E-ZPass tags in their hands or leaving them on the dashboard, which can create
a traffic safety hazard. You can get free adhesive strips to mount E-ZPass tags to your windshield at any AAA branch.
• Review and update your E-ZPass payment options. If you replenish your account by cash or check, it is important to monitor your account balance. You can do this online at www.e-zpassny.com or by calling E-ZPass Customer Service at 800-333- 8655. In addition, you can sign up for mobile alerts and receive text message notifications about your account.
• Using a credit card will automatically replenish your E-ZPass account when it gets low. Customers can also choose to sign up for the pay-per-trip plan, which is linked to a bank account and pays all the tolls incurred once per day. Don’t forget
to contact E-ZPass to update information when your credit card expires or you switch to a different card or bank.
Cashless tolling will continue to expand on other toll roads and bridges in the Northeast. By following these tips, drivers can save money and be prepared for easier travel across our roadways.
