New Yorkers Can Now Obtain
Real ID Driver’s Licenses
AAA is advising travelers and drivers that New York driver license holders now have the option of obtaining Real ID driver’s licenses. New York state implemented the program in October 2017.
Drivers now have three options: the standard license; the new Real ID license and the “Enhanced” Driver License.
After October 1, 2020, the Federal government will require Real ID compliant driver licenses, or an EDL, to board domestic flights or enter federal installations or military bases.
Those without Real ID or an EDL must carry additional identification such
as a passport. The state has offered enhanced licenses for several years with an additional $30 cost. There will be no additional fees for a Real ID.
Driver licenses in New York State are valid for eight years and the current standard license is sufficient to board domestic flights until October 2020. Nevertheless, AAA advises drivers to consider the new requirements when renewing their current license and plan ahead accordingly.
The Real ID Act, approved by Congress in 2005, enacted
the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the federal government establishes standards for states to issue federally secure driver licenses.
