Don’t Even Try to Tour Rome in a Day
The adage that “Rome was not built in one day” should translate to your visit to this Italian city as: “You can’t see everything in Rome in one day.”
Or Italy for that matter. Which is perfect since AAA Travel has a Member Choice Vacation that spends 10 days in Rome and the Amalfi Coast.
Your journey begins with a welcome dinner as you and your fellow travelers get to know each other over local delicacies and wine. The next morning you might elect to take part in an optional tour of the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. Later, the group will tour the sights of ancient Rome including the Arch of Constantine, the Circus Maximus, the Piazza Venezia and the Roman Forum. The highlight will be an in-depth, guided visit of the magnificent Colosseum, the largest amphitheater ever built.
The next day you head south to visit the Benedictine monastery of Montecassino, where Benedict of Nursia, later named a patron saint of Europe, established his first monastery. Besides its history, glamorous chapel and tranquil courtyards, the monastery also offers some great views of Italy as it sits high on a hill.
Heading further south, you will visit the seaside towns of Sorrento, Amalfi and Minori, where you
will sample more local specialties with a visit to a family-owned limoncello factory. Here on the Amalfi Coast you also will visit a buffalo mozzarella factory. Yes, the cheese is made from the milk of Italian Mediterranean buffalo, a breed of water buffalo. Next stop, a bit further down the coast, is Paestum, where local guides will usher you through the best-preserved Greek temples outside of Greece.
Back up the coast, you will head across the Mediterranean Sea quickly to the island of Capri for a quick visit and a ride up a funicular to the town of
Anacapri. Back on the mainland, most of a day will be spent at the excavated ruins of Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. A local guide will provide a thorough tour of the preserved original buildings from nearly 2,000 years ago.
Before heading home, your tour will visit Naples and the captivating Naples National Archaeological Museum, which has an extensive collection of Roman and Greek relics.
And with all those memories, you’ll be glad you didn’t try to fit it all in one day.
BASK IN THE STRIKING LANDSCAPES as you journey from Rome
to Southern Italy’s breathtaking Amalfi Coast. Delight in the unique regional art, culture, food and wine.
