TAX SEASON TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR IDENTITY
Now that it’s tax season, it’s time to get your game face on and sharpen your skills – and your pencils – so you can file your tax returns accurately and on time.
DON’Ts...
• Wait until the last minute to file your tax returns. When you’re in a rush, you’re more likely to make a mistake that can cost you dearly down the road.
• Reply to any email, text message or phone call that appears to be from the IRS. The IRS only uses the U.S. Mail to contact taxpayers. If you get an email, text message or call, contact the IRS directly to report it.
• Let mail sit in your mailbox too long. Scammers know that your important tax documents will be arriving in the mail starting in January, so never leave your mail in the mailbox overnight.
• Request a physical check for your tax refund. Don’t give fraudsters the satisfaction of finding a check in your mailbox. Use direct deposit. It’s safer, and you’ll have the money in your bank account much faster.

You also need to keep an eye out for identity theft risks that can ultimately ruin your tax season – or your credit. Here are a few “do’s” and “don’ts” that can help.
DOs...
• Learn as much as you can about any tax specialist or tax-preparation software that you might be considering. While there’s plenty of free help
to be found online, you may also run across phony websites and software downloads built specifically to capture your personal information.
• Use a computer with updated anti-virus and anti- malware software when filing electronically, and make sure you have a secure network connection.
• Store your tax documents in a secure location and verify that your tax preparer is doing the same.
• Monitor your credit report before, during and after-tax season. If someone steals your identity, your credit reports may contain early signs of identity theft.
