AAA Stands Committed to Community Leadership

Kilo is the name of Sidney’s latest effort to address the growing concerns over illegal drugs in Shelby County. Due to an alarming increase of illegal substances
coming into and ultimately impacting our communities, AAA is committed to assisting law enforcement efforts.
When AAA was founded in Chicago on March 4, 1902, its foremost goal was to lead the fight for improvements in the nation’s roads. The advent of the “horseless carriage” – the automobile
– had created many traffic
concerns. Over the years, AAA has continued its efforts to be a community leader – albeit with more modern-day issues – fighting for the legal rights
and safety of motorists and travelers. Over the past 40 years, we have been actively involved in reducing the drunken driver problem.
These efforts have since broadened
to include drugged driving and the safety concerns that legal, as well as illegal drugs, present for motorists. AAA Shelby County, along with other local businesses, have provided the needed funding for Kilo. He is a K9 officer on the Sidney police force who works with his partner, Officer Jennings. Together they have the daunting task of recovering illegal drugs and ultimately improving, through their detection and recovery efforts, the safety of our community.
AAA Shelby County is also supportive of the training efforts our local law enforcement places on identifying
and removing impaired drivers from our roads. We recently provided
lunch to officers from 17 different law
enforcement departments attending an ARIDE training program held at the Sidney Police Department.
ARIDE, or Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving
Enforcement, is a program developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to provide officers with general knowledge related to drug impairment. The program stresses the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of the seven drug categories. The course trains officers to observe, identify and articulate the signs of
impairment related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both, in order
to reduce the number of impaired driving incidents and crashes that result in serious injuries and fatalities. We applaud law enforcement for their efforts to improve the safety of our local AAA members and all motorists.
In addition, AAA Shelby County financially supports the efforts of the AAA Foundation For Traffic Safety 501(C)(3), whose mission is, “To identify traffic safety problems, foster research that seeks solutions, and disseminate information and educational materials.”
Two current research projects, Leveraging & Enhancing Alcohol Countermeasures to Reduce Drugged Driving and Properly and Effectively Adjudicating Drugged Drivers, will provide valuable data to assist law enforcement and the courts as they grapple with the new legal challenges associated with impaired driving.
