Deborah Barga, CEO, AAA Shelby County
Welcome to 2022! We are two full years into the COVID-19 pandemic and I can’t believe that we are still having these conversations regarding COVID-19 in 2022. I have vivid memories of closing down our office, placing certain restrictions
on employee and
member contact while also having to implement cleaning and
Shelby County has been dealing with these changes
for over two years now and our top priority has always been the health and safety of our AAA members, AAA employees, and everyone who lives in the community we serve. Our hearts go out to everyone who has personally been affected by this virus over that period of time.
While this situation has been continually evolving, we have made every effort to closely monitor
and assist AAA members and customers. These conditions have caused us to also change the way we do business in travel, driver education, and even our legendary Emergency Road Service.
While the decision to travel remains a personal one, if you plan to travel, our AAA travel consultants are available to help you evaluate those plans and stand ready to assist you in navigating the many options that continue to evolve daily. They are able
to explain and navigate complicated airline cancellation policies, travel insurance options available, and ensure you’re compliant with COVID-19 policies when you’re ready to travel in the U.S. or internationally. Their value has been proven during these challenging times.
The driver education of individuals who choose to use our program has also been affected by the cancellation of face-to-face classes, implementation of our on-line program, and continued backlog of students wishing
to complete the program in order to become licensed drivers. In that process, we have added new state licensed instructors, returned to a few face-to-face classes, and continue to work to resolve these issues going forward. Our focus has and always will be to provide quality education with a focus on safety in educating these new drivers.
We have also had to make adjustments to our Emergency Road Service over the past two years. In some cases, disallowing individuals an opportunity to ride along with the service provider out of an abundance of caution for both individuals. These extra safety precautions have been necessary to keep our providers healthy in their efforts to provide the level of Emergency Road Service that you have come to expect.

safety precautions almost exactly two years ago. At the time, I remember thinking this situation would be resolved in a few weeks at best, maybe a few months, but never in my wildest imagination did I think that we would still be dealing with this in 2022 – two full years later.
COVID-19, despite our best efforts, has drastically changed the way we live our lives today. Most of them unfortunately have not been positive. Like all of you, AAA
