Enjoy the Emerald Isle on AAA's
Quest for the Throne Tour
TM
Sea cliffs, lighthouses and tales they could tell are integral to Ireland. So too is the Emerald Isle’s history and beauty, which create a phenomenal backdrop not only for tourists, but also for those producing big hit movies and TV shows. Such
was the case when movie crews making films like “Braveheart” and the HBO Emmy-winning hit series “Game of Thrones” selected Northern Ireland, for their award-winning productions.
AAA’s Quest for the Throne tour, so named because it visits many of the sites visible in the “Game of Throne” series, is full of Ireland’s beauty. Let’s take
a look at some of the highlights included on this especially scenic route through the northern part
of the island, before turning south to Dublin, where opportunity for personalized choices make for an extraordinary trip conclusion.
After arrival in Ireland, you’ll journey to Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, which is unique due to the design of the central three-story keep, which is cruciform shaped. A guided tour provides insight into the castle’s history, previous residents and some more recent visitors, including Mel Gibson and the cast from “Braveheart.”
Continuing to County Louth, visit Monasterboice,
a monastery which contains two of the finest High Crosses in all of Ireland. Both of the crosses are made of sandstone. The Tall Cross stands about 7 meters high, and has more iconography than any other cross in Ireland.
Northern Ireland’s six counties, which remain a part of the United Kingdom, are unique and diverse, and each provides great scenery. Dunluce Castle, which can be reached via a wooden walkway, is a splendid structure siting on basalt rock, jutting out over the sea, and provides views that are worthy of the stop.
Walk among the coastal Giant’s Causeway’s colossal volcanic columns, formed over 60 million years ago by
cooling lava, before winding through one of Ireland’s popular scenic routes, the “Nine Glens of Antrim,” which offers an array of scenic mountains, valleys and coastline. You can also explore the beautiful Dark Hedges, a breathtaking line of beech trees planted
in the 18th century, which was also featured as a location in the “Game of Thrones” series.
Later, a guided tour of the cosmopolitan city of Belfast affords insight to the principal industries and “the Troubles” that once plagued this capital of Northern Ireland. Today, feelings of optimism make Belfast an energizing
a local-guided tour. Then, a day at leisure delivers opportunity for a variety of pursuits. Stop at Trinity College to see the Book of Kells. Choose to visit the Guinness Storehouse, where exhibits depict how this world-famous stout was first created and samples of finished product are available, or the General Post Office, to learn about its role in the Easter Rising.
There are plenty of museums, shops and pubs with authentic Irish food and spirits to choose from. Your AAA Travel Agent can provide even more details about this once-in-a-lifetime tour to the Emerald Isle.
