TRAVEL
Australia and New Zealand
By Judie Karhan
The vast country of Australia is geographically comprised of some of the world’s most diverse regions, ranging from tropical forests in the north to the Great Barrier Reef along the eastern coast, to the farmlands of the south and the arid deserts of the Outback. While neighboring New Zealand, diminutive in size, packs the scenic wonders of the world into an area no greater in size than Colorado.
Join AAA Central Penn as we journey to these vibrant countries on a AAA Discoveries Outback to the Glaciers journey in October 2022.
Sydney, the departure point for further exploration, is most easily recognized by its magnificent Sydney Opera House, poised majestically on Sydney Harbour. Take time to explore this national icon on an expert-led tour, perhaps followed
by dinner and performance. For another view of the opera house and the city’s skyline, enjoy a scenic dinner cruise in the picturesque Sydney Harbour.
Beautiful weather can be expected in Cairns, Australia, the tropical gateway to one of the world’s most spectacular natural attractions
– the Great Barrier Reef, haven for thousands of species of sea life as well as turtles and birds. Soak up the tropical atmosphere on
the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which soars above the rainforest canopy and offers a bird’s-eye view of unspoiled nature.
You’ll experience the vast landscapes and tranquility of Australia’s Outback in Alice Springs, where cultural immersion includes dinner in the bush, set against the backdrop of this unique desert environment. Learn about the history and culture of the Arrernte Aboriginal people on a guided walk on their sacred land. Traverse the “Red Centre” and head to Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the heart of the Australian Outback. A highlight here will be a tour of “the Rock” to witness the changing colors of Uluru at sunset accompanied by a champagne toast.
In contrast to the Outback, the Victorian city of Melbourne
offers a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. An excursion to Phillip Island will take you to the home of the world’s largest colony of Little Penguins.
Then it’s on to Queenstown, New Zealand, nestled against a picturesque bay and snowcapped mountains. Cruise beautiful Milford Sound on the South Island; take flight for spectacular views of New Zealand’s Southern Alps; take an exhilarating jet boat ride on the Shotover River; and visit famous Mt. Cook National Park, an alpine paradise.
Christchurch is known as the “most English city outside of England.” Home to stunning gardens, cathedrals and parks, the city promises pleasant days of sightseeing.
