Peru: Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca
Peru is a multicultural nation, filled with traditions, a unique gastronomy, and vast natural reserves, known for their distinctive and timeless beauty. Thanks to a long history defined by major ancient civilizations, Peru is home to more than 5,000 archaeological, and 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Most notable among the sites is Machu Picchu, an absolute “must do” for any traveler to South America. This revered site of Inca civilization lies nearly 8,000 feet above sea level in the midst of the Peruvian Andes.
A testament to the power and ingenuity of the Inca empire, Machu Picchu was built without the use of mortar, metal tools, or the wheel. The secluded Incan city, with approximately
200 buildings, is a structural masterpiece worthy of its shining reputation. The massive ruins and terrace mountainsides are instantly recognizable.
If you plan to travel to this Peruvian landmark, keep these things in mind:
• Getting to Machu Picchu is an adventure, so enjoy the journey. You can’t simply drive to Machu Picchu. You’ll first need to fly to Cusco, and from there travel to Aguas Calientes to access the ruins.
• Daily admission is limited, and some ticket packages sell out months in advance, so it is best to plan your trip to Peru around your Machu Picchu schedule.
• Expect periods of dense fog and light showers year-round. Be prepared to visit rain or shine.
• Plan time to acclimate to the high altitude. Overnighting in Cusco or Aguas Calientes can help your body adjust.
• You must be escorted by a tour guide in order to enter the site, so be sure to arrange a guide in advance of your journey. Better yet, take a guided tour to Peru with AAA.
