AAA Pet ID Tag helps reunite dog with owners!
Oliver and Cody were adopted from the Columbia Greene Humane Society in 2011 and 2013, respectively.
In the summer of 2017, AAA Hudson Valley launched
the Pet ID Tag program. These pet tags were meant to serve the same purpose as our car key tags. The pet tags
are made of durable hard plastic and can be fastened to the pet collar. If your furry friend gets lost or wanders off, someone can see your member number and pet’s name on the tag and notify AAA. AAA then calls the member and helps coordinate the reunion. Thanks to one of the AAA Pet ID Tags, longtime members Mary and Terry were reunited with their dog, Oliver.
Mary and Terry initially heard about the pet tags from the Pet Friendly Edition of the AAA member magazine when the program first began. When they visited our Latham store to book their next vacation with the Travel Agency, they ordered pet tags for both of their dogs, Oliver and Cody.
In early 2019, Mary and Terry were working out on their farm in Ghent as they often do, taking care of the horses and the grounds. The house has doggy doors meant so the dogs can come and go as they please. It isn’t abnormal for the dogs to get out and wander around the neighborhood, but they do have to be careful. The area is popular for hunting and the dogs
often stumble upon fallen deer and the likes. Mary and Terry utilize loud whistles to call the dogs back home, but only Cody responds to this regularly.
On this particular day, Mary and Terry were tending to duties as usual when they received a call from
AAA Hudson Valley. The representative on the phone was calling to let them know that their neighbor about a half mile away had their dog, Oliver. It turns out that the neighbors were new to the area and so Oliver was an unfamiliar pet to them. They had two dogs of their own and knew how important it was to help get him back to his family. AAA helped coordinate the reunion via the phone, and Terry went with his truck and picked up his pal.
Mary and Terry say that they aren’t sure what would have happened if Oliver hadn’t been wearing the AAA Pet Tag. They fear he might have been sent to a shelter or that the authorities might have been notified. The couple is thankful for the free member service provided by AAA Hudson Valley and even suggested that we make some for their horses.
