Breast cancer is the fifth most common cause of
cancer deaths worldwide. One estimate is that 1 in
8 America women will develop breast cancer. More
than 80% of women who develop breast cancer do not
have a strong family history of the disease.
(Breast cancer is rare in men, but it is on the rise.)
Age and genetics are risk factors you cannot control,
but a healthy lifestyle can help you prevent breast
cancer or detect it early enough for effective treatment.
Avoid alcohol and obesity, exercise regularly, and eat a
diet rich in antioxidants to promote a healthy immune
system and balanced estrogen levels.
Doctors recommend a monthly self-exam, five to
seven days after your menstrual period. Women should
check the skin of their breasts for dimples, ridges
and scales. More than 80% of breast cancer cases are
diagnosed when a woman discovers a lump that feels
different than the rest of her breast tissue. Four out of
five lumps biopsied turn out to be benign cysts.
The earliest breast cancers are detected by a
mammogram. It has been reported that mammograms
decrease deaths frombreast cancer by about 30
percent. Cancers detected in early stages (0-1) have a
98 percent cure rate.
Treatment typically includes surgery and some
combination of hormone blocking drugs and
chemotherapy and radiation. There are more than
20 drugs commonly prescribed as part of breast
cancer treatment and five new drugs from three drug
companies are currently being tested in trials across
the country. New drug combinations are also being
investigated.
