Approximately 70 parents and their soon-to-
be-driving teens attended AAA’s Dare To Prepare
workshop hosted by Nazareth Area High School on
Sept. 18.
Dare To Prepare is designed to help parents and
teens begin open discussions early about the entire
learning-to-drive process.
The presentation includes:
• State and national statistics on teen driving
• Pennsylvania’s new Graduated Driver’s License
components
• Parent’s role and responsibilities
• Teen’s role and responsibilities
• Parent-teen driving agreements
• Frequently asked questions about insurance
• Available resources
The overall goal of the workshop is to increase
awareness of the risks facing young teen drivers and
increase parental involvement in the learning-to-
drive process.
Numerous studies have shown that the greater the
parental involvement after licensure, the lower the risk
to young drivers. Teens who reported having parents
maintain control of vehicle access and monitor travels
were less likely to become involved in crashes. Teens
with free and unrestricted access to a vehicle were
involved in more crashes.
The sad fact is that traffic crashes continue to be
the number one killer of teens. Nationwide, about
3,000 teens die in traffic crashes every year.
Top risk factors for these drivers include
inexperience, teen passengers and other distractions,
speed and space management, lack of seat belt
use, and nighttime driving. Many states, including
Pennsylvania, have taken measures to address some
of these risks by instituting a more comprehensive
Graduated Driver’s License system.
GDL ensures young drivers gain necessary driving
experience under low-risk situations before granting
full licensure. Pennsylvania’s newest passenger
restrictions for young drivers allow them to continue
to build their driving experience without the
distraction created by other teens. Pennsylvania
has also recently strengthened the seat belt law by
requiring all passengers under 18 years be properly
restrained anywhere in the vehicle.
Parents need not rely on state laws to protect their
teens. By creating a parent-teen driving agreement
or contract, parents can enact protective measures
and ensure both parties have a full understanding of
what is expected.
Oftentimes parents do not realize the level of
influence they have on
their young drivers. Much
of this influence is simply
leading by example;
teens will tend to adopt
their parents’ driving
habits and attitudes. In
fact, by the time children
are 8 years old they have
already developed a
general driving attitude by watching, listening and
learning “how to drive” from the back seat. All that
remains is learning the mechanics of driving.
By being aware of the known risk factors their teen
drivers face, parents can be proactive and take the
necessary steps to protect them.
