There are four cost components to an automotive
repair; diagnostics or tear down, labor costs (on a
per-hour basis), parts costs and miscellaneous shop
fee costs.
Diagnostics and tear down are the preliminary
steps every shop must undertake to determine
what is wrong with the vehicle and these must be
authorized by the customer. Once diagnostics and
tear down is complete, the repair facility will create
a repair order with an estimated cost for repairs.
The repair order includes the diagnostics, labor
(in hours), parts and miscellaneous costs. Labor cost
ranges from $60 to $150 per hour based on the
facility and locale. Most reputable repair shops
display their labor rates. The cost of parts can vary
widely based on whether they use after market
(parts manufactured by a provider other than
the vehicle‘s manufacturer, such as NAPA) or
manufacturer provided parts. Usually, a dealer will
use manufacturer parts, which can easily cost 30%
to 50%more than after-market parts (increasing the
dealer profit margin), even though both parts are
required to meet the manufacturer’s specifications of

like kind and quality. Then add miscellaneous shop
fees such as fluids, hoses, belts, hazardous disposal
fees and taxes (if applicable).
Understanding the costs for automotive repairs
does not eliminate the stress of paying for them.
Performing routine maintenance as recommended
by the manufacturer can keep your vehicle’s engine
parts in good working condition longer and avoid
