Consulting our magic snow globe, we can confidently make
thi seasonal prediction: thousands of drivers will find
themselves stranded in the dead of winter thanks to a dead
battery. Understanding what keeps your battery cranking can
help you avoid being left out in the cold.
As air cools, the oil in your car thickens. Parts move slower
and it requires more energy for the battery to turn over
and start the engine. A battery loses a third of its power in
freezing weather. If the temperature drops to zero or below,
your battery has only half its power.
To keep your battery operating reliably in any season, have
a trained technician clean battery cables and check that the
charging system is charging at the correct rate. The AAA
network of Approved Auto Repair facilities is an additional
source for requesting a diagnosis of your vehicle’s charging
system.
One way to protect your battery from the cold is to use a block
heater. Pre-warming your engine reduces winter wear and
tear on your battery and starter, and also reduces emissions
and increases fuel economy.
What do you do if your battery has been exposed to very
cold weather? A fully charged battery will not freeze unless
the temperature drops very low. If it does freeze, it destroys
the lead coating and the battery cannot charge. If the sides
of your battery seem to bow out, this is a sign the battery is
frozen. Never try to boost a frozen battery because it may
explode.
Maybe you are a snowbird who winters in the sun and
leaves the car behind. If your battery is allowed to discharge
completely a few times, you will end up replacing your battery
because the lead coating on the battery’s internal plates will
fail – -- and so will the battery. Use a AAA Battery Tender®
charger to keep the battery charged during periods you are
not driving your vehicle.
No matter what precautions you take, your battery will
probably be reliable just 3 to 5 years. An aging battery
increases the odds that you could spend some unscheduled
time in your driveway or parking lot. Here’s some good news
about batteries to make your season a little brighter. If you
do have battery problems, AAA can help. AAA Battery Service
offers free diagnostics – and technicians come to you. They
can test your charging system and, at your request, install a
quality AAA battery right on the spot.
Your new AAA battery comes with a member discount and
a 72-month limited warranty and free replacements for 36
months, nationwide.
Every battery we replace is recycled, so if your New Year’s
resolution includes a little more environmental responsibility,
we’ve got you covered there, too. So far, AAA Battery Service
and our collection program, AAA Great Battery Roundup®,
have kept more than 2 million batteries from contaminating
landfills.

What image comes to mind when you first think
of roadside assistance? Is it a tow truck? Most people
would answer yes. But we thought you would like to
know that new technologies and industry changes
have proactive companies adopting a different
approach to the familiar ways of roadside assistance,
and AAA members are the beneficiaries. But first, a
brief history lesson.
In 1915, AAA clubs began providing the first
roadside service, eventually performing basic
repairs at the roadside from small vehicles and
motorcycles. Over the years emergency road
service has been provided by ever-larger vehicles,
and is now largely dominated by tow trucks. It is
now uncommon to see a truck capable of towing
a motor home used to respond for a tire change
on a small sedan at the roadside. While a large
percentage of roadside assistance services do not
require a tow truck, the public has come to expect
one to arrive.
While having a “do-it-all” tow truck respond to
every service situation may seem like a suitable
response, prohibitive operating costs have
prompted AAA clubs to provide more economical
means of providing service while still nsuring that
their members get back on the road saf ly. AAA
is pleased to be leading the charge back to what
worked best in the early days. Does this mean that
you will be surprised when a different vehicle shows
up to lend aid next time you have a breakdown?
We hope not. Please keep reading.
Currently nearly 60% of all AAA member break-
downs do not require a tow truck. Many of the
services where a tow is initially expected or
requested can easily be resolved on the roadside
with what we call a light service vehicle, equipped
to perform minor repairs at the roadside, thus
eliminating the need for many tows. After all, a tow
transports a problem rather than resolving it. In
order to serve our members best, AAA has begun
offering mobile services in more efficient vehicles,
helping to get them going again as quickly as
possible. AAA, as the nation’s largest roadside
assistance provider, is equipping our roadside
technicians with tools and training to deliver the
most cutting-edge solutions around.
Did you know that AAA is the first and only
motor club to provide a mobile battery testing and
replacement service? In 1999, AAA revolutionized
the mo or club industry by pioneering this
important new member benefit. Since the
program’s inception, some two million batteries
have been delivered and installed. We also recycle
your spent battery. This convenient service is saving
members the inconvenience of multiple battery
jumps and the need to seek out a replacement
source that means more wasted time.
Using technology honed from providing
roadside assistance for some 95 years, AAA mobile
technicians have learned to perform other mobile
repairs when warranted. Of course, it is not possible
to provide roadside solu ions for all breakdowns.
When a member’s vehicle c not be rendered
operable and needs a tow, we’ll still show up with
a tow truck. AAA service representatives can also
recommend one of our trusted AAA Approved
Auto Repair facilities.
The benefit of having a vehicle serviced by a
AAA Approved Auto Repair facility include: a
12-month or 12,000-mile warranty on parts and
labor, and fair resolution on any complaints, as
all facilities have agreed to be bound by AAA’s
decision after a thorough investigation. Today th re
are some 8,000 reliable repair facilities located
through ut North America to serv you.
We are p oud tha AAA remains at th forefront of
the r adside assistance industry. As other roadside
providers come and go, we will continue to be
here for our members. We value our members’
satisfaction and safety mor than anything else.
Through inventive products, strategies, and
services, we are constantly searching for new ways
to ensure that through all your travels, you can rest
assured that we’re always with you.
