New Orleans is home to Bourbon Street, the
Saints, Cajun and Creole cooking, and of course
Mardi Gras. My husband and I had wanted to visit
this vibrant city for many years and finally had the
opportunity to do so this year.
What a place to visit! We had high expectations
and they were surpassed. We visited for a long week-
end Saturday morning through Monday afternoon.
Although I would have enjoyed one more day, three
days and two nights is a fine length of time to see
what the city offers. Here is a summary of some of
our favorite New Orleans things to see and do:
Jackson Square
– This historic park offers horse-
drawn carriage rides, the Presbytere Louisiana State
Museum with a special exhibit on the affects of
Hurricane Katrina, the St. Louis Cathedral, and local
artists and street performers.
Riverside
– Strolling along the Mighty Mississippi
offers views of cargo ships and paddle wheel boats
in the muddy waters of the Mississippi River. Turn
back to the city and walk toward the French Market
(an open-air market with vendors selling anything
from t-shirts and beads to cheese plates made out
of melted wine bottles).
The French Market is also a great area to sample
some classic NewOrleans food. A definite stop is Café
Du Monde – a NewOrleans establishment offering
fresh cafe au lait beignets 24 hours a day. Further in
the market is another not tomiss dining experience –
the world famous N’awlins Café and Spice Emporium.
Scoot on up to the counter and try their Crawfish
Etouffee and their Seafood Creole Gumbo with some
sweet tea. After enjoying this meal, you can purchase
spices andmixes to bring back home.
Bourbon Street
– Although Bourbon Street never
closes, it doesn’t really wake up until late afternoon.
Here you will see eclectic street performers, dance
clubs and beaded necklaces strewn everywhere. Just
off of Bourbon Street is St. Peter Street; here you will
find Pat O’Briens, famous for the Hurricane drink and
dueling piano bar. To find authentic NewOrleans
jazz, next door to Pat O’s is Preservation Hall. Bienville
Street intersects with Bourbon Street and we found
two great restaurants here. We enjoyed chargrilled
oysters at the Acme Oyster House and a elegant and
delectable meal at GW Fins on Bienville Street.
Royal Street
– This is a great area for antiquing or
discovering a new artist, as this street is full of small
shops, clothing and art boutiques. This is a very
nice area to visit after brunch or dinner. And
speaking of brunch, there is one brunch not to be
missed – Brennan’s, home of the original Bananas
Foster and amazing Southern Hospitality.
The Garden District
– This district is the home of
Southernmansions and the famous above-ground
cemeteries. Take the streetcar from the French
Quarter as a fun and inexpensive way to see the area.
Travel to New Orleans is relatively easy, with
direct flights that are available daily. Although a few
blocks outside the French Quarter, the Central
Business District is a nice, quiet area to stay. We
stayed at the Whitney Wyndham, a grand historic
hotel with amazing attention to service.
In the words of a New Orleans native we met who
lost his house in Katrina and only just got resettled
this past January…“Tell everyone to come on
down – we’re open!”

Good Times in New Orleans
Michelle (Colandrea),
Just wanted to let you know that we
loved our trip to Alaska. The scenery,
starting in Fairbanks and ending in
Vancouver, was breathtaking. The
accommodations in the lodges
and on the
Diamond Princess
were
outstanding. The food was delicious. Maybe best of all
was the superb organization. Our travels on ship, rail,
and coach all came together like clockwork. We were
pampered by outstanding tour guides and staff every
step of the way. Jean and I believe your attention to
detail, Michelle, made this a truly great vacation. Thank
you for your effort and expertise on our behalf.
