Each of the Hawaiian Islands has a unique
personality embodied in its landscape and culture.
Of Hawaii’s six main islands, most visited are
Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii – The Big Island.
Oahu is a blend of beach-centric city life and quiet
countryside. Hawaii is known for its volcanoes,
Maui for its whale watching, and Kauai for its lush
vegetation and striking coastline.
Oahu
Oahu is home to the majority of Hawaii’s diverse
population. Honolulu, the capital city, absolutely
buzzes with activity. Famous Waikiki Beach is one
square mile of round-the-clock fun and excitement,
with extensive choices for hotel accommodations,
dining, shopping and entertainment. Visitors also
enjoy a variety of historical and cultural attractions,
including the timeless memorials of Pearl Harbor;
Iolani Palace, the only official state residence of
royalty in the United States; and Diamond Head
State Monument, one of Hawaii’s most famous
landmarks.
On the North Shore, the feverish beat of Waikiki
is softened and slowed by the sound of palm
fronds shifting in the ever-
present breeze. Life is
slower in Haleiwa. The
cultural hub of the North
Shore blends local style and
country ambience with
tourist lures like trendy surf
shops, little stands selling
wind chimes by the
roadside, pricey but
ambient restaurants and
art galleries.
Maui
The island of Maui was named after a demigod
who was said to have pulled the islands from the sea
and lassoed the sun atop Haleakala. Watching the
sunrise at Haleakala National Park might make
anyone a believer in such lore. At almost 10,000 feet
above sea level, new rays creep across a blanket of
clouds, broken by rising mountains. For this view,
drive up the winding Haleakala Crater Road. The
goal is to be at the top no later than half an hour
before sunrise. Seeing the horizon grow fiery as the
sun climbs into the sky is
worth the early wake-up call.
Stay just 20 minutes beyond
sunrise to witness the dawn
stretching across Haleakala’s
30,000 acres.
In addition to exceptional
resort hotels and golf
courses, Maui has some of
the best whale watching in
the world. Whale watching
kiosks along Lahaina Harbor
are abuzz with activity from
December to May, during
whale watching season.
Lahaina was the center of
whaling in Hawaii in the
mid-1800s, and this history is
open to exploration with an
extensive Whaling Museum
off of Kaanapali Beach.
Hawaii
Volcanoes are a
quintessential component
of the Big Island landscape.
Volcanoes National Park
provides an up-close view of the destruction and
creation cycle of this mesmerizing natural disaster.
Rivulets of lava run through ash to the sea, leaving
boiling trails in their wake. Located 30 miles
southwest of Hilo is the Kilauea volcano, one of
the most active on earth.
Hawaii's is home to five species of sea turtles, but
snorkelers and divers most commonly encounter the
green sea turtle not far from shore, as it feeds on
marine plants in shallow coastal waters. Punalu’u,
located on the southeastern Kau coast, is one of
Hawaii’s most famous black sand beaches and an
excellent place to spot the green sea turtle. The
constant volcanic activity creates the black sand, and
even green sand can be found on the island.
Kauai
Kauai’s Napali Coast boasts miles of green pinnacles
that plummet into the turquoise water. There are
many options for admiring this verdant landscape,
including hiking, boat tours and dinner cruises. There’s
no wrong way, but navigating the coast by kayak
proves a rewarding if challenging experience. Sitting
mere inches off the water is the ideal vantage point
for intimate exploration of marine life and provides
access to magnificent sea caves.
Expending copious amounts of energy is a good
feeling, especially knowing comfortable and relaxing
accommodations await. The Outrigger Kiahuna
Plantation features oceanfront condos on 35 acres of
gardens. The expansive grass-covered grounds are
situated on Poipu Beach, which is great for swimming.
A trip to The Islands holds so much beauty,
wonder and adventure. Its ever-present trade
winds, swaying palms and soft sand beaches invite
travelers to come and stay awhile.
