Summertime…the season when many people

their vegetable garden.

Asthma and allergies make it difficult
for millions of Americans to breathe
freely. Since the 1980s, the number of
people with obstructive airway diseases
such as severe allergies and asthma has
been increasing and more people have
been hospitalized.
Attacks can be triggered by a wide
range of causes, including pollens, dust
mites, animal dander, smoke, cold air,
and in some cases, exercise. Allergy skin
testing is used to identify allergens that
trigger asthma attacks. Mild allergic
reactions – sneezing and itch, watery
eyes – are annoying but easy to manage.
However, severe allergic reactions, such
as difficulty breathing, can be life
threatening.
It’s important to manage severe
allergies and asthma with the guidance
of a doctor. With treatment, it is possible
to lead a normal life with even severe
allergies or asthma. People with asthma
have even become Olympic athletes,
such as swimmer Greg Louganis and
skater Kristi Yamaguchi.
Over-the-counter allergy drugs
typically contain antihistamines and
decongestants in short-acting and
extended-release forms. Strong
medications require a prescription and a
doctor’s supervision. Many people with
asthma carry metered-dose inhalers.
These cartridges release a fine spray to
unblock airways. However, overreliance
on inhalers may cause dangerous side
effects, including irregular heart rhythms.
Use of the right medication in the right
dosage helps most people with allergies
and asthma control symptoms. Common
prescriptions include bronchodilators
that widen the airway and corticosteroids
that reduce inflammation.
To save on prescriptions for everyone
in your family, take advantage of
AAA Prescription Savings. This is not
insurance, it is a discount at participating
pharmacies. AAA members save an
average of 24 percent on prescriptions
from nine out of 10 pharmacies. Log on

you can start saving today.
