Escape the sweltering humidity by dipping into any
of these water parks or flying through the air at
heat-assuaging speeds. From safaris to slides, find out
what’s new this summer in the world of adventure.
Hersheypark
Hershey, Pennsylvania
Fans of the Roller Soaker will have to find a new
favorite this summer, as the coaster has been
exchanged for a 5,000-square-foot sprayground.
Hersheypark says the new play area fits in well with
their family-oriented atmosphere and gives guests
what they said they wanted: more water features.
Roller Soaker’s departure also
made room for additional seating
at the Boardwalk waterpark,
which is in the process of being
expanded. Two more slides will be
up and running for Memorial Day
weekend.
Dorney Park &Wildwater
Kingdom
Allentown, Pennsylvania
America’s Got Talent finalists
All Wheel Sports rev up Dorney
Park’s nightlife this summer. The
extreme sport action production is
the highlight of the park’s “Summer
Nights of Celebration” series as talented bikers and
gymnasts from all over the country perform gravity-
defying stunts at the Good Time Theatre.
Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark
Pocono Mountains, Tannersville, Pennsylvania
A ski resort that moonlights as a theme park is
sure to have some steep slopes for adrenaline
junkies to happily barrel down. Camelbeach’s
Camelback Mountain Coaster flings riders down
a 4,500-foot-long steel track traversing trees and
rocky cliffs. The one-driver, one-passenger
adventure was due to open July 2012, but hit
New Summer Thrills
delays that will make it new for this season. Also
new are twin 4,000-foot Zip Flyers that soar from
the top of the mountain over the entire water park.
These are two of the park’s few dry runs. As the
largest water park in Pennsylvania, they’re best
known for rides like the Titan, an eight-story tube
slide, and family raft slides such as Dune Runner
and Sandstorm.
Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari
Jackson, New Jersey
The largest Six Flags in the country gets even
larger. Wild Safari animal park unites with Great
Adventure for the theme park’s self-proclaimed
most dramatic transformation in 13 years.
When the newWild Safari debuts – slated for
Memorial Day weekend – one admission will grant
access to both New Jersey parks and guests may no
longer drive their own vehicles. Instead, tour-guide
trams will ferry visitors from exhibit to exhibit.
Camp Aventura, this year’s new attraction, grants
the more intimate encounter of handfeeding and
petting exotic animals. But it’s not just a petting
zoo: Thrill-seekers will now be able to opt for
zip-lining across the park for an added fee.
Before leaving, stop by the AAA Northampton
County office to buy discount tickets for these
attractions.
